The Government's re- commendation is simply that the Red Ensign should be flown aft These flags should be easily identi- Alable by any practised air obser ver flying low. A 10-breadth on- sign measures 24ft. by 16ft., though most merchantmen fly a smaller one, but in case of necessity the captain can obtain the full-sized fas

Tel. No. 28037 and 28039,

Some British warships in the Mediterranean have had the Union Jack painted on the tops of their turrets during the recent troubles to guard against the chance of in-. eldents, and it is expected that before long the practice will be- come general in all navles Even that. however, does not overcome the difficulty of the use of false colours. It is a sea custom well established for a ship to hoist any colours

she pleases to mislead another, provided always that 'she hoists her proper national ensigns before opening fire. This was done with the Q-ships during the war and the German raiders ilke the Moewe and the Graif masqueraded as Scandinavian ships while they were making their way out into the. open sea.

ALARM ON CLYDE OVER SHARK

"Made For Ship"

Fears of oatmen and fishermen in the Firth of Clyde over the sharks in the Firth were intensified by the account given by the master of the steamer Dalriada, Capt. William McKillop.

Anxiety has grown' since a shark capsized a sailing boat in Carradale Bay, Kintyre, Argyllshire, causing the loss of three lives.

Fishermen claim that they can identify the shark from among the other sharks in the bay and they have named it "The Maneater."

Recently the Dalriada, on her run from Gourock to Campbel- town, passed the spot where the boat was capsized, "The water," sald Capt. McKillop. "was alive with basking sharks.”

"As the Dalriada approached. all the sharks promptly submerged with the exception of one monster, much bigger than any other, and probably 40ft in length...

"This shark made straight for the Dalriada. It circled round and round the steamer, Icaping high out of the water and lashing its tall furiously."
