FLATLY REJECTED -

Shanghal, Sept. 20. Admiral H. E. Yarnell, Comman der-in-Chief of the U.S. Asiatic Fleet, has sent a note to Vice- Admiral Hasegawa refusing to move the American warships,

Guam and Luzon, which are now at Nanking, and says that it is necessary for them to remain there as long as there were Ameri- eans in the capital. Admiral Yarnell has requested Vice-Admiral Hasegawa to instruct the Japanese raiders to "avoid these vessels."

"Admiral Sir Charles Little, Com- mander-in-Chief of the China Station, and Admiral Le Bigut, Commander-in-Chief of the French Astalle Fleet, have also fiatly re-

The Cunard White Star Iner Aquitania is now the only ocean- guing vessel in the world to pós- sess four funnels.

She has acquired that distinc- tion as a result of the removal of two funnels each from the Union-. Castle Hiners Arundel Castle and Windsor Castle, at present being reconstructed at Belfast.

Within the last few years ocean "fashion." which once decreed that all the largest passenger ships should be four or at least three-funnelled, has changed. Among famous liners now broken up of sunk, which once" showed four "smoke stacks" were the Cunard Line's Lusitania. (35,0000

und tona),

Mauretania (35,000 tons) the White Star Company's Olympic (45,000 tons) and Titanfc (45.000 tons); and the French Line's France (24,000 tona).

Smoke has been leaving the "smoke stacks" owing to the ad- vent of the mptor-ship and oil- fnelled vessels, and the tendency Ja to reduce the number of fun- nels even further. Out of the nine largest ships in the world at present in commission. no fewer than four-the Italian Rex and Conte di Savoia and the German Bremen and Europa-have only two funnels. The remainder, with the exception of the Aquliania, have three. In nearly all the lat- ter cases only one or two of the "stacks" are actually used for carrying of fumes, the others be- ing utilised as gymnasium, store- room, or for other purposes.
