"Mr. G. W. Hutcheson, Offelal Com- Recelver, stated that the pany was formed-in March, 1938. with a nominal capital of £1,000, which was later increased to £1.- Company agreed to 500. The purchase from the administrators of the estate of. Sir John Corden their interest in the goodwill of his business as a manufacturer of light aero engines.

In 1935 Sir John was anxious to make flying cheaper, but the main difficulty which had to be overcome was the provision of a cheap engine. He conceived the Idea of modifying and adapting a 'certain type of motor-cur engine for light aircraft purposes, and started a business with that ob- Ject in view.

The Oficial Receiver added that Sir John Carden died in December, 1935, but the expert- menal and development work was continued. Shortly after the new management took over, there were accidents, both in this coun- try and in France, to the "Flying Flea" type of machine. AS B.18- sult a number of orders-was can- celled. The sale price of the en- gine had been fixed by Sir John Carden at 88 105, but the pro- At on it was very small indeed, and the directors were reluctant to increase the price, as that would have defeated the whole object of the Company,

The failure of the Company was attributed to the delay. for technical reasons, in obtaining delivery of different parts for engines, as a result of which or- ders were cancelled, to the lack of demand for a light engine con- sequent upon the non-success of the "Flying Flea" type of craft, and to loss of money expended in experimental and developmental work.

The Company's, statement of affairs showed liabilities £1,157 and assets £132.

The liquidation was left in the hands of the Official Receiver:

HEADQUARTERS ·

. The season was started at the new Central British School. It was - ንኽን evident that our members were unable to frequent our meet- ings as often as when the Club was situated in a more convenient place. Thanks to the kindness of Rev. JR. Higgs. Viear of St. An- drew's Church, who very kindly offered us the use of a room in St. Andrew's Church Hall, on Decem ber 8 we moved into these new premises.

At the new quarters the bi-week- ly meetings have been very well attended, and to meet the wishes of members. the Committee decided to remal open on Friday nights during the Summer.

IP

Our Arth annual dinner took place on December 15 at the Penin- sula Hotel In all 18 were presen! ncluding the following guests Mr. E. Ammann, chairman of the Canton chess players, and three members of the Victoria Chess Club: Mr. B. G. Birch, Dr. M. 0. Frister and Mr. J: Fitzgerald. Our President. Rev. G. E. S. Upsdel. welcomed the guests and presented the prizes won during the year. A riost enjoyable time was spent y all present, and the guests were 'entertained by friendly games.

Only one inter-club match was played during the season." We were hosts to the Islanders on December 29 at the Gloucester Hotel and won by 5 games to three.

There was Hittle time left for matches during the season as most members were engaged in the tournaments.

INTERPORT MATCHES

REVIEW

Our activities during the year were well supported by members. "The bi-weekly meetings at our new quarters were well attended, even the Friday meetings during the Summer received excellent support. Not only the number of com- petitors in the tournaments, but the completion of all scheduled games are evidence of the keen in- terest our members take in chess. An out-of-the-way variety of chess, known as "Kriegspiel," has become a favourite entertainment amongst the members.

It should be mentioned that on June 29 a Lightning Tournament was arranged, the prizes being won by Messrs V. Rush and D. E. Car- valho.

NYON PATROL PLAN

Resentment In Italy

Rome, Sept. 17. Resentment regarding the Nyon Patrol Plan led to the adoption of a sharper tone by the Italian press with reference to Great Britain than has been noticed for several weeks past.

The Italians feel that the inter national situation has been aggra, vated by the Nyon plan. which many quarters consider directed against Italy.

La Tribune says that Italian- British relations are again at a period of crisis, and refers to the collaboration of the British and French fleets in the Mediterranean, as "a regular naval demonstration of the cooperation of the British and French fleets in a possible future war."

Another report states that the British and French abandonment of the control scheme on the, Spanish coast, in order to divert destroyers to the anti-piracy cam- paign, is a matter of complete indifference as it is considered abolition of this branch of the non-intervention regulations will make no material difference, since war materials continue to reach Republiclan Spain from Russia in any event...
