Snakes are unusually numerous this summer in the West of England, in Hampshire. Sussex and Essex, and holidaymakers are advised to be careful when walking across fields of heather, or along sunny paths.

The bite of an adder, or viper, Britain's only poisonous snake. is not fatal except with young child- ren, and only then if prompt treatment is not given. It can be very painful, however, and if the victim is net in good health it may result in a troublesome illness. The adder 13 easily identified.
