£7,500,000 Loss To Revenue
The Postmaster-General, Major G. C. Tryon. addressing the Aber- deen "Chamber of Commerce re- eently, said it would be extrava- Bant to reintroduce the penny post at the moment. The Post Office would 1080 £8,100,000 straight off on the existing traffic by the reduction of postcards to a Halfpenny and letters to a
and
there penny,
would be £7,500,000 to be raised by taxa- tion to replace the lost revenue.
Remarkable development in the Post Office Savings Bank at Aber- deen was revealed by Major Tryon. The bank, he said, had progress- ed in the last three months by 18
per cent. That was an enormous addition to the savings bank's re- sources, and It was the greatest development in all Scotland.”
Since the reduction in the cost of telegrams from 1s. to id, the traffic in this department had gone up by 80,000 a year. The telephone expansion had also been enormous. It was apparent when the shilling telephone call was Introduced that the far-distant cities throughout the country would benefit most, and in Aber- deen it had thrown an exceptional strain on the staff.
STRAIN ON STAFF
"I want to ask you." he said. "when passing calls to remember that our star has to cope with work that has expanded eight times since the days when the higher charges were in, operation. We have had to increase the num- ber of circuite from two to 11, and five more circuits will be put into operation in the course of the next few days. I had hoped that they would be in operation in time for me to make the announcement when I came to Aberdeen."
The Postmaster-General also described the new Empire air mall service for which there, was a feet of 28 dying boats. He did not believe there was any country in the world with a comparable neel.
Finally he mentioned that last year 10,000 more employees had been added to the Post Office staff. As a result of the enormous dé- velopment in the telephones ser- vice they had had to take on 11.000 more people on the en- gineering side in the last two year.

Japan Runs Up. "A Debt
Some of the Peiping news coming second-hand from Shanghai, must be taken with several grains of salt. When we hear from Shang- hai, instead of from North China, that the Japanese in the North are confiscating and burning all plc- tures of Sun Yat-sen and Chlang Kal-shek, and that the Chinese in conquoered towns are being forced to y Japanese flags, the only safe comment 1s: "Significant, if true." Yet it is probably true. It is by no means unlikely that the political agents of the Japanese Army in the North
