Taingtao, Sept. 13, With the sudden appearance of Japanese alreraft carrier at Lenyunkang. strategic harbour on the north Kiangsu coast yester- day, military authorities believe naval activity along the Kiangsu coast iniminent.

The Japanese carrier appeared off Shinkouso, on the southern Shantung coast near the Klang-

su border, on Sept. 11, with four other Japanese warships. Two planes were sent from the carrier to reconnoître over several places inland yesterday. Late yesterday, the carrier suddenly sailed for Lienyunkang and sent six observa- tion planes to reconnoftre over the area around the harbour Im- mediately on arrival.

The carrier seized several Chi- nese fabing Junks in the harbour. All traffic between Tsingtao and Haichow has been stopped.---- Central News.

JAPANESE MASS ATTACK

Talyuan, Sept. 13. Japanese troops attacked the Chinese troops east of Tatung. Important coal and rail centre in northern Shansi, day before yes- terday, precipitating a fierce bat- tle.

The opposing forces fought to a standstill for the whole noon and early part of the evening. the Anally resulting in the Japanese giving way to a Chinese counter- attack of vastly superior numbers.

The Japanese casualties are re- ported to have run well above the 2,000 mark, the Chinese suffering equally heavy losses. One Japan- ese plane was shot down "during the fighting.

IMPORTANT DECISION

Britain To Hold On In Shanghai

THE

CHINESE WAR

Britain is to hold on in Shang- hal. This is probably the most important of

the reported de- cisions of a recent meeting be-

tween the Prime Minister, Mr. Eden. and Lord Halifax. It is a wise decision, even ar Levitable one if we are to escape the danger of losing our position in the busiest of the Treaty ports. To a very great extent modern Shanghai is the creation of British enterprise. says the "Manchester Guardian." With the French and Americans

and the mercantile Chinese-we had laid the foundation of its Immense prosperity long before Japan was in any condition to in- terest herself in such matters. the Yet if Shanghat falls into hands of the Japanese armed forces they may be disposed to recognise only existing facts. One of these facts should be the pre- sence of British and French gar- rigons in the Settlement and Con- cession, and of European civilians who have stood to their posts in defiance of danger.

The British Government. would seem, still hopes that Japan may consent (as China has al- ready consented)

to a mutua! withdrawal of the warring forces trom Shanghai and its neighbour- hood. That hope must be a slen- der one New landings of Japan- ese troops north and south of the city as well as in Shanghai itself suggest that General Matsui in- tends to Aght to a finish there.

COMMANDER A CANTONESE.

Shanghai, Sept. 13. It is now revealed that the com- mander of the beleaguered bat- talion at Paoshan, which was wiped out following 48 hours of incessant bombardment by Japanese land and havai forces "on September 5 to 7, was a native of Kwangtung.

Central News,

Major Yac was only 29 years of age and was greatly admired and esteemed by his comrade officers He was unmarried and his men. and is survived by his 60-year-old father. Central News:

It does not seem, however, as if Japan had so far made any very striking military progress in the Shanghai region. Her equipment on land is probably far superior to. that even of Chiang Kai-shek's best drilled armies. Her complete command of the sea has allowed her warships to shell Shanghai unimpeded and to protect her landing parties. But when her troops have met the Chinese in force they seem to have been held up "pretty completely. Unless the Chinese armles can be taken in the rear. which may not be easily done, the battle for Shanghal seems likely to be prolonged. While it lasts the devastation of the city will continue.

HARDER NUT TO CRACK L It is plain, indeed, that the Japanese have a. far harder nut to crack than they had even in 1932, when the fighting at Shang- hal ended in something remark- ably like, a military "draw." The proclamation of a partial blockade over 1,000 miles of the Central- and South Chinese coasts may be a proof that this fact is recognised in Tokyo. On the face of things

it

does not seen as 1f such 3. blockade could have much effect on the war. Only Chinese sups are affected, and the most Im portant supplies may very well reach China in foreign vessels. Moreover, Canton with its railway and the British colony of Hong Kong are the vitally important shipping centres south of Shang- hai.

The blockade affects neither: It could only be applied to Houg Kong if Japan was ready for an open break with Britain, and that she is scarcely likely to risk.

Still in one way or another the war (which, officially, is still only an incident") now touches two. thirds of Eastern China.

ever happens. It will be hard for

Japan to turn back until she has won "satisfaction" enough at least to save her face
