SHANGHAI SITUATION

Shanghai, Sept. 12.

The district around Pootung was bombed to-day by Japanese planes, Their air force and artillery also attacked Chapel, and as a result numerous fres were started, several of which were in the im- mediate vicinity of the Inter- national Betdement.

Following bitter fighting, the Japanese forces were driven back after

their attempt to break through the Chinese lines in the village of Yanghang.

According to a Japanese report which, however, has not been con- Armed by the Chinese. the Japa- nese troops succeeded in entering Yanghang in the evening and their vanguard is advancing in a wester- Iv direction, along the highway to Luhang.

It is regarded as probable that the Chinese will withdraw their forces to Luhang where strong fortifications have been construct- ed between Llubang and Talchong.

From Chinese headquarters it is reported that the Japanese brought about 100 pieces of heavy artillery into action in the fight for posses- ston of Yanghang and that the village was completely destroyed.

It is observed that the Japanese have altered their tactics and are. no longer attempting to break through the Chinese lines by in- fantry charges. They are flow resorting to, systematic artillery barrages and air bombardments. withholding the infantry charges. until the enemy positions are destroyed.

This change is perhaps due to the fact that the Japanese succeed- ed in landing a large consignment of artillery during the past few days.

Comparative calm prevailed in the Lutho and Lotien sectors to- day, the Japanese concentrating their efforts to the Yenpo and Yanghang districts in an attempt to advance in this section of their
