the higher figure with a rounded line; it is a Victorian and Ed- wardian line and belongs to I domestic period in dres when clothes, emphasized curves and were very ornate. It is not likely that the overtrimming of the period which brought so much fuss into formal dress w reappear. The new materials have to much surface interest that trimming takes a very secondary place. This higher line, which has nothing of the Empire fine, is being shown wit a slightly. corselet effect - In" evening dresses and will call for greater care in corseting than the easter lines of last season. Already some of the autumn velvet gowns that are designed for Scotland. where evenings are chilly. show this new line and also some of the " lamé cloque, gowns that have been made for those going abroad and seeking something" different from the gowns of the season. effect is to give a greater impor tance to the line of the bodice, which tapers slightly to the waist."

The

This line is also seen in the new afternoon coats which are follow- ing very closely the fuller bodice line and the slightly tapering waist. In fine woollens, in new velours and zibeline materials, the fuller bodice line is secured by having the fur trimming (which. is usually Persian lamb) used so that it appears to be a sleeveless jerkin or holero. A new type of afternon coat in a heavy black slik jersey has Persian lamb in this sleeveless coat fashion. Ал- other new coat shows a high hip-line, which is made by using the fur this time a blue fox as panniers

Fur coats follow the new line only in the flat furs: the deeper skins, like mink. keep very much to the conventional lines that are best in the richer furs. But they have their changes; collars are not as scanty as they were, and are folded back and brought down In a fold at either side. Muffs are to be generally carried in the autumn and will be in a variety of shapes, from the small melon to the large muff that is hard to lose. Muffs are well in the picture- as they belong to the period of curved Agures and are coy fashion as can be seen from any family album. With the bonnety hat, which is being made in felts and autumn fabrics and seem on the way to acquire the strings of the 'eighties, there will be a dis- tinctly Victorian air about the

Some unusual woollen materials are being added to those already shown. There is a beautiful cloth, a mixture of wool and metal, the metal being a brise net woven with seed pearls.. Another wool mixture is a lamé tricot in brilliant mix- tures, such as "lacquer red and gold, emerald and gold, and black and gold. Both of these materials are suitable for cocktail or dinner gowns. A new afternoon woollеn reflects, some of the strange allk prints which have made the sum- iner fashions noteworthy. A series of small landscapes like tiny water colours are scattered over a black ground: the material is a very fine wool crepe specially treated for-printing-and-about 10-colours-fine contrast to the reddish-brow are used. Another design shows a feather printed in various colours, the slightly dark look of the fea- ther giving an odd effect. Dresses in these materials require very little trimming but call for great skill in using the pattern to the best effect.

attractively named Balkan Gold- and Tea Rose. Thorn Apple is a new colour for accessories-it is a greyish mauve, rather cold, but a

brim turning well off the face on the upside. It is cut short at the back where the felt is twisted- up to the crown of the head and ends in two upstanding points.
