AIR RAID
(Continued from Page 1)
Examining the damage done, I saw three bomb holes. One was near 1 hangar, although no damage had been done to the hangar. The
Impressive most crater was approximately about eight feet in diameter and a damaged motor truck lay near by. Only 100 lbs. bombs were used by the Japanese.
D.ring the engagement one Japanese plane was brought down by the Chinese anti-aircraft guns and this plane has been found at Lien Sha Shan or Lily Mountain." The bodies of the three Japanese viators were also found.
After dropping their "bombs the Japanese planes made off in the direction of the coast hotly pursued by the Chinese machines as far as the Bocca Tigris Fort and it was here that the Japanese plane was brought down.
Then the other five raiders made off as quickly as possible in the direction of the coast and the Chinese machines returned Canton.
Alleged Secret Clauses In Sino-Soviet Pact
Furnishing China With War Material
Paris, Aug. 31.
What are alleged be a series of secret clauses in the Sino-Sovie: Non-Aggression Pact is published in "Le Jour." "By virtue of these clauses, says Le Jour." the Soviet Republies would engage themselves to furnish China before November with war material including 362 aeroplanes, 200 tanks, 3.000 horses, 2.500 motor cycles, 1,500 tractors.
150,000 rifles, 120,000 shells and 60,000,000 cartridges. In addition the Soviet would furnish regularly Russian or other volunteers and technicians.
Chloa return would have to deposit gold in the Soviet state bank covering 50 per cent, of the supplies. Additionally the Soviet would. receive a series of concessions in North China.- Beuter.

Inventor Of First Hydroplane
"In 1908-7 I was chairman of the London Musical Club. I have always been keen on music and have composed several waltzes and songs. Some of them have been quite successful.
The man who dasigned Eng- to
land's first airship and the world's, first hydroplane, and carried Eng- land's arst air mail, talked to me. writes a special correspondent of the "Evening Standard."
It is reported that three Japan- ese planes also visited Shiu Kwan, an important centre on the Can- ton Bankow Railway.
During the raid the citizens of Canton behaved in a perfectly

was no sign of panic. Policemen were posted at street corners and main- tained order..
DISTRESSING SSCENES Distressing scenes were witness- ed at the Kowloon Canton Railway Station yesterday when the morn ing express arrived, packed with panic-striken refugees who fled to the Colony following the air raid! in Canton yesterday.
One of the refugees, a woman told a "Dally Press" representative, that in the early morning the buzzing sound of aeroplanes was heard In the distance, shortly
after which the siren was sounded,
and later the rattle of guns came to her ears.

Another fleet of Chinese planes then appeared and a combat took place following which the Japanese
raiders turned away.
RAILWAY FIGURES Major R. D. Walker, Manager of the British Section of the K.C.R. stated yesterday that on August 28 approximately 2,386 passengers

COUNCILLOR RUNS OFF WITH, MACE
As a climax to a stormy scene of protest the Mace of Glasgow City was recently borne out of the Council chamber by an ILF. member and was hidden for a while elsewhere in the building, writes a Scottish correspondent.
He told me the story of his life, a story which has not been told before, for he has never sought publicity and few people, even in the world of aviation. have ever
heard his name.
It is Dr.. F. Alexander Barton. M.R.C.B., LR.C.P. He is now 77 and has little connection with air- ships or hydroplanes. Now hla main Interest is a private hotel he owns in Italy. -
"It is one of the finest private hotels on the Italian Riviera," Dr. Barton told me proudly.

"But I am not successful at any of them," he said. "when it comes to money making.
"I have done fairly well non-
cially in my work as a doctor, and als with the hotel, but airships and hydroplanes never brought me "a penny.

AIRSHIP DESIGN
"I 1901 I approached the War Office with a design for an airship, but they turned me down. I kept on badgering them, and in 1003 got a contract.
"In September 1902 I took up a balloon to fly for the Manchester Hfe-boat fund. I had 3000 post- cards on board.
"When I got near Manchester. somebody fred a gun at me. One shot went beneath the basket, and balloon. I. heaved ballast over- board quickly and was carried off to the north.

The proceedings accordingly
went
on in the absence of the Mace, for which officials made a truitless search until Mr. Taylor disclosed its whereabouts.
The Incident occured when LLP Councillors protested against a ruling by the Town Clerk, that a minute concerning the appoint- ment of a New Transport Manager should stand over, until the ques- tion of a salary had been settled by another committee.

"I was flung in the air and bad- burned about the face. The force of the explosion/ can be judged from the fact that a bucket I had in my hand fung to the top of a tree.
"About that time I was experi- menting with airships. I had de- signed one 20 years before. My airship at the Alexandra Palace used to attract thousands.

"The order never went through, as war broke out."
An American scientist doubts whether there are any evidences of a lost race in England. He`can't have looked in the Stop Press.
