JAPANESE PREPARE FOR BIG PUSH

Shanghal, August 30: A full prevails on the Lluho-Woosung Front as the Japanese prepare for a big push whilst the Chinese are consolidating and strengthening their lines of defence. The Japanese line runs from Luho to Lotien and then bends back, in the shape of an arrow, to Woosung. The Chi- hese line extends from Lotien. Tachang, and Kiangwan to the North Station. The Japanese troops, up to now, have not functioned their blus jackets in Northeast Shanghai although there are no Chinese troops to separate them along the waterfront.

The Japanese are estimated to have landed between 15 to 25 thousand troops so far and up till the present they have confined their operations in an attempt to push back: the Chinese in order to make room to land. · The Chinese would have done well to follow the example of the Turks in Gal- lipoli to prevent the troops from obtaining a footing but the presence of Japanese warships did not allow the defenders to take up positions too near the bank.

French, and German native couriers at опе time regularly covered on foot the 156 miles beat from Tangler to Fez in as ittle as seventy hours. Gratulties were paid for the quick- est delivery Journeys.

They frequently met with hostile tribes. On one occasion. when the mail called to arrive, the bodies of the two couriers were seen floating in the sea, their mall bags with them.

In those days men were swifter than donkeys and camels, and car- ried prodigious loads, but recent years saw postal service in Morocco almost as efficient and swift as that at home.
