In 1903 a certain gentlemen took out an endowment insurance polley with the intention of providing for his daughter when it matured eighteen years later, but even the best-laid plans go astray and the payment of premiums was dis- continued after the policy, had been in force for only three years. Like many people, he believed ment meant complete loss of all that stoppage of premium pay-

Commander C. W. Byas, late H.M.S. Hermes (Squadron Leader, R.A.F.) has been appointed to the Ar Staff of the Coastal Command, R.A.F., Lee-on-the-Solent, which has not hitherto included a naval officer. DETECTOR ALLOWANCES
Under Orders in Council of August 14, 1928, and July 3, 1938, allowances of 6d. and yd, a day respectively. were "äuthorized for ratings of the telegraphist branch when qualified and detailed to perform the duties of higher tele- graphist detector or telegraphist detector in vacancies in the com- plements of submarines. The Admiralty now consider that all telegraphist ratings duly qualified should be paid the appropriate allowance continuously while they remain in the submarine service, and sanction for this is given in a new Order in Council
