TWO CHINESE
FIGHTING AT
NANKOW
Detailed Account
Nanking. August 15, Details of the fighting at Nan- kow, the important Great Wall, "pass thirty miles northeast of Pelping which is still being held by Chinese forces, were received by Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek. President of the Executive Yuan, in a report from General Tang En- po, commander of the 89th Division at the Nankow front to-day.
On the morning of August 11, according to General Tang's report, 3,000 Japanese infantrymen and 700 cavalrymen launched an at- tack on the Chinese lines at Nan- kow and Tenshengkow. Twenty Beld pieces and nine aeroplanes, were brought into play during the attack, but the Japanese failed to dislodge the Chinese troops from their positions.
On the following day, 5.000 Japanese reinforcements advanced under cover of heavy shelling from 60 deld pleces in an attempt to rush the Chinese defences at Hukutsun, Hsinchunkow and Sulin- kow, but were driven back six successive times in spite of addi- tional aid in the form of bambard- ment by 30 Japanese planes.
General Tang reported that 500 Chinese and 1000 Japanese soldiers and officers were killed during the engagement.
After a brief lull during the night, the Japanese brought up two more divisions of reinforce- ments from the rear on August 13. Fierce fighting between the op- posing forces continued through- out the day, ending with
the Chinese still holding their posi- tions.
During the heaviest shelling by "Japanese artillery during the day, the Chinese troops were ordered to dle in the trenches rather than to retreat.
The Chinese defences at Huku- tsun and Nankow are strong, and all Chinese troops stationed in these sectors will repulse any at- tack from the "Japanese. General Tang's report concludes.--- Central News

Shanghai, August 15. There are conflicting reports as to what actually happened when Japanese planes attacked the Chinese air bases last night and dawn to-day. The Japanese reported great successes. The Chinese however claim that the success lay" with them. Chinese miltary headquarters at Nanking announce that when the Japanese planes raided Hangchow one Chinese machine was destroyed but four Japanese planes were shot down. The Chinese authorities in Shanghai dený any damage to the Hangiao Aero- drome although they admit that one Chinese officer was killed and another wounded. Meanwhile the Japanese are trying to fish out five bombers which were brought down into the sen yesterday while at- tacking the Japanese aircraft carrier. The Chinese officially admitted that these planes were those which belonged to a squadron of six missing-Reuter.

FIFTY BLOWN DEAD
Shanghai: Mr. F. M Howard, from San Francisco, told Reuter that he saw at least fifty Chinese blown dead when Chinese shells landed in the midst of processing refugees in Hongkew a mile north- ward of Soochow Creek within the Settlement, Many of them had been allowed by the Japanese milltary authorities to re-enter Hongkew to retrieve their possessions left behind during the first hur- ried exodus.-Reuter.
Shanghai: According to a foreign source, as a result of the air-raids undertaken by the Chinese Air Force during the last two days, which completely surprised the Japanese, the Japanese Naval au- thorities held a meeting at the Idzumo this evening and came to the conclusion that in the event of the Chinese Air Force pressing further Japanese warships would withdraw from the Whampoa River to some other locations where they will be less likely to be menaced by the Chinese from the air.
For this reason It is generally belleved that the Japanese Landing Parties will be too far away from their "base" and their fighting strength will undoubtedly be considerably reduced. In this con- nection the Japanese had to abandon the present positions for the time being periding the arrival of reinforcements and it is thought that there will be a lui in Shanghai in the course of the next two.. or three days,- Da-Dao, *-

OPTIMISTIC GROUND To-day's news from Shanghai disappoints the hope that hostili- ties which broke out yesterday between the Chinese and Japanese forces might be quickly arrested.
British and other governments, interested in the maintenance of the immunity at the International Settlement, remain in close touch, and both the Japanese and Chinese authorities are aware of the im portance which these governments attach to the safety of the Settle ment, and observance by military forces of both sides of the con- ditions necessary to ensure it.
