NORTH CHINA SITUATION

Tension At Tsingtao

'Tsingtao, Aug. 9, Owing to the arrival of two Japanese warships and the patroll- ing of Japanese police and volunteers the situation at Tsingtao has suddenly become tense.

All shops closed their doors at 8 pm, and very few people were seen walking in the streets..

During the last two days over ton Japanese steamers arrived at Tsingtao, and it is said that these ships will be used to convey the Japanese residents back to Japan-Chinese. Evening Press.

CLASH AT YANGLIUCHING

Tientsin, Aug. 9, "Last night at about 8 o'clock several postal vans left Tientsin for the south to distribute letters but were forced to return when half-way.

JAPANESE TROOPS LEAVE HANKOW,

Hankow, Aug. 9.

At 3 o'clock this morning the Japanese troops left the Japanese Settlement at Hankow and went or board the Japanese warships for Shanghai.

It is reported that thirty Chinese policemen have been sent to help the Japanese police to preserve peace in the Japanese settlement.

Orders have been given for the removal of all the sand bags, etc.---

Another Record Set By The Normandie

Paris, August 9.

The 82,799-ton French Uner; Normandie, present holder of the Blue Riband of the Atlantic, and which last week set up a record for the westward Atlantic crossing, has now bettered her own record for the eastward journey. The glant liner covered 2.536 miles from Am- brose Lightship to Bishop's Rock in three ́days 22 hours 7 minutes at an average speed of 31.2 knots.----Transocean News Service.
