On July 12, also the fifth group of ratings who are qualifying as observers' nintes began Part II of their course at the R.A.F. School. Since April they have been... undergoing Part I of the course at the naval schools for navigation, signals, and gunnery at Portsmouth. Unlike the pilots, of whom 30 per cent.are supplied by the Royal Air Force, all the ob-- servers in the Fleet Air Arm come from the Navy.

A vacancy is announced for a senior scientific at the Admiralty. Candidates. who must be British subjects by birth, must possess an Honours degree, or its equivalent, In metallurgy and must have been | trained in physical chemistry and in research methods. They must possess "works and foundry expert- ence In both ferrous and "nori- ferrous metallurgy, and a know- ledge of welding and of technical French and German is stated to be desirable. The salary offered is £680 a year, rising by" annual in- crements of £25 to £800, and senior scientific officers are eligible for promotion, by merit, to higher grades carrying salaries up to £1.- 250 per annum.
