Union of Scottish Mine Workers at Lanark.

A

Mr. Welch was, seconding resolution, which was unanimously carried, reaffirming the con- ference's demand for nationalisa- tion of the mines and ancillary industries, and congratulating the Labour Party for giving it a place in Labour's immediate programme. There was, thought Mr. Welch, embedded in the minds of people

the idea that the mines were, not worth nationalising because the owners had "picked all the berries from the bush."

That was not true.

Coal was

going to have a greater value. in the future than ever it had had.

FLAVOUR FROM COAL Speaking of the work carried out at the Government experi- mental station at Greenwich. where £100,000 has already been. expended. Mr. Welch said he had there seen lars of fruit flavour, such as essence. of lemon, for flavouring paddings. extracted trom British coal, and the chemists assured him that they were only on the fringe of their discoveries.

Mr. Alexander Sloan, secretary of the union, who moved the resolution, expressed the opinion that they seemed nearer national- isation of the mines 25 years ago than to-day.

After the Sankey Report in 1919 If a book-maker had been pre- pared to open a book he would have given very short odds ca nationalisation being achieved in this country..
