OPIUM CASE - AT “CENTRAL”

Court.

The hearing of the case in which Charles David Evans, aged 37, car penter of the motor vessel Java- nese Prince, and Wong Yau, aged 61, described as a boarding-house runner are charged with doing an act preparatory to the exportation of opium, and with possession of 1,000 taels of prepared oplum on board the Javanese Prinec on June 17, was continued before Mr. K. Keen at the Central Magistracy yesterday.

The prosecution was" conducted by Mr. WM, Thomson, Assistant Superintendent of Imports and Exports, while the defendants, Evans and Wong. were respectively represented by Messrs. W.A. Mac kinlay, and J.T. Prior.

In answer to Mr. Prior's sub- mission at the last hearing that Yasim bin Dollah, the ship's bo'sun, was in fact an accomplice of the defendants. Mr. Thomson held that no evidence had been given to that effect.

that Dollah was an accomplice and was the moving spirit of the whole

In reply to His Worship's hold- Ing that Wong had a case to ans- wer on both charges, Mr. Prior declared that he would appeal against the decision on both of them.

Answering" a submission put forward by Mr. Mackinlay, Ela Worship said that he did not pro- pose to alter the procedure of the Court in regard to the charges, but Informed Mr. Mackinlay that the defence could put forward documents on their own behalf.

Sergeant Robinson gave evidence that he boarded the Cheung Keng and found the defendant lying wounded in the spare cabin.

Formal evidence was then given by Acting Chief Inspector K. W. Andrew, Sergeant H. N. Moran, and Inspector Hopkins.

The Police Interpreter, Tam Fak HI, gave evidence of the statemerit the defendant made when he was that at the time of the act he was charged which was to the effect. in a sub-conscious state of mind.

The defendant in the witness stand stated that when the crime was committed he had lost his senises, and that he had no know- ledge of what had occurred unt!! he was informed in hospital by his relatives.

The defendant was committed to the August Criminal Sessions.

An inquest into the death of Tsol Sau was held at the Central Magistracy yesterday when Mr. K. -Keen sat as Coroner, assisted by a
