REPLIES GREETED WITH CHEERS
London, July 12.
Mr. Eden answering a batch of North China questions in Commons, gave a resume of the course of the fighting based on information which he admitted was naturally somewhat incom- plete and most of which had already been published. Ile re- marked that under the terms of the Protocol in 1901 Japan and other foreign powers were entitled to station troops in certain points in North China In order to keep open free communica- tions with the sea. The number of Japanese troops in North China were believed to amount to seven thousand. The possible repercussions on, British interests and International trade gen- erally of the Chinese-Japanese tension, were fully recognised.
Replying to Mr. Plugge, Mr. Eden said that if the Anglo- Japanese conversations developed in London they would evident- ly afford an opportunity for discussing those events with the Japanese Ambassador. It was the earnest desire of the British Government that there be a settlement hot only of the present dispute but of Sino-Japanese difficulties generally. (Cheers).
Mr. Arthur Henderson suggested making representations to Japanese Ambassadora as regards the undesirability of con- tinuing the practice of holding manoeuvres near Feking.
Mr. Eden replied these matters were extremely complicated and he was sure it was the general wish of the House that "we should exert ourselves to try to prevent this becoming a more serious" matter." (Cheers)-Renter.
"REPEATED DEMONSTRATIONS
OF BAD FAITH”
Tokyo, July 12. A spokesman of the Foreign Office" stated the North China situation was grave and it was
necessary to maintain strict watch on the Chinese troops "because of repeated demonstrations of bad faith."
Japanese forces have fallen back to Fengtai as the 29th Route Army retreated to the west bank of the Yung Ting river but some, Central Army troops are reported to be proceeding northward along the Pelping-Hankow Railway.
Paris, July 12. The press takes a most serious view on the North China fighting. The Foreign Omice have no of The "Petit Journal" says that fol- cial information on the terms laid 'lowing the creation of Manchukuo | down by the Japanese militarista the Japanese Cabinet has decided on a second attempt to dismember China but for reasons of prestige of Nanking cannot allow North China to negotiate with the Japanese sovereignty in the richest province of the republic. *Le

TWO POSSIBLE EXPLANATIONS
London, July 12. · The newspapers continue to give prominence to the crisis in North China but in none of the comment there appears to be a general de- sire to abstain from anything likely to aggravate the situation. Official circles are reticent and are of opinion that much more information is necessary before the position can
be properly understood. A high authority who returned recently from the Far East Interviewed by Reuter said, "There are two possible explans- tions. No other foreign troops manoeuvre about the country so much as the Japanese did in the present tense altuation and it is hardly surprising if the Chinese troops resent it The other ex-
