Most of the newspapers to-day largely feature the Sino- Japanese clash but maks no comment.

Diplomatic and business circles believe that the Japanese Government is anxious for a peaceful settlement since harsh measures toward China would ruin the prospects of the British-·· Japanese negotiations and might also aggravate trouble with Rus- sla and the Amur River,

Chinese loans are not affected and the demand for Chinese rafls which were conspicuous in recent weeks, continues to be strong.

Several observers in no wise anti-Japanese emphasise the fact that there are hugé Japanese forces in North China and the practice of having military manoeuvrés all over the country con- . stitutes just irritation to China and clashes were only to be ex- pected-Renter.
