CHINA'S NATIONAL RENAISSANCE
POTENCY OF THE "NEW LIFE MOVEMENT"
THE EDITOR
*When you think of Chins don't think of one nation. - That is all wrong. Think of" Chink as- you would of Europe," because China contains within her väst ferritory Provinos-which are- different in sentiment and conception as Germany is from France, or Italy from Spain. Get that into your head and you'll get the right perspective.”
So aid one of the acknowledged authorities on Chinese affairs in conversation with me shortly after I arrived in Hong Kong
Some months later, conversing at an official banquet in honour of the late Mayor of Canton with a multi-millionaire Chinese who finds domicile under the British flag in Hong Kong more satisfy- ing than under his own national flag in China, he dealared, "The basis for the unification of China must be absolutely commercial, financial. It is no use talking platitudinously about theories of Govern- ment and the idealism of the Now Life Movement. Fancial prosperity spells national happiness.. Unity will be the natural result. Nothing else can do it."
Others, whom one was justified in presuming were in a parition" to know what they were talking about, assured me, and have persisted in their contentions whenever I have met them, that the party which controls Ching to-day, the famour Kuomintang, is so hopelessly divided into two camps-one süle leaning towards Communistic the other towards Democratic principles of administration that the unity. of China in as "far, distant to-day as it was before the advent of the Generalissimo, Chiang Kai-shek, when he succeeded the immortalized Dr. Sun Faktem. These people accuse the leaders of the Kuomintang of being musceptible to graft and they stigmatise the whole political machine of China as being “rid- died with rattenuess," to quote the words of a leading financier in Hong Kong.
All these comments and many, last, have missed the main point being carried along the road to many more, made to me by people which represents the pivot of acinity by the sheer enthusiasm and of proven ability and high position of the New China.
