FINE VICTORY

OVER VON

CRAMM

STRAIGHT SETS

London, July 2

Lasing only nine games through- out the musich, · Dönald - Budge (United States) to-day became the new amateur tennis champion of the world when he 'defeated Baron Gottfried Von Cramm (Germany) in three straight sets on the centre coørt at Wimbledon. The last American to win the title" was Ellsworth Vines in 1932.

Budge defeated the German champion by scores of 6-3, 6-4, 6-2, indicating that the young Ameri- can Divis Cupper played the de- wastating type of game that has featured his clear cut victories "throughout the tournament.

Budge's performance has been Sruly remarkable. From the first round to the final he has lost only ore set and that was in the semi- anal when Frankie Parker, his Davis Cup team mate, won the first of a four-sets match.

REACE IN THE BOME PACIFIC

MrLyons's Proposal

The proposal made at the open- ing of the Imperial Conference by Mr Lyons, Australia's Prime Min- later, for a regional pact in the Pacific has a good deal more to be said for it than its public re- ception would. suggest, writes a correspondent in the "Manchester Quardian" In the foreground of the facts to be acquceo I ALS favour are, Ärst, that it was pre- ceded by a great deal of thought and, secondly, that the thinking however theoretical in the first

instance, is now accord with local actualities. Of these, one is that Japan is anxious to escape

from the Isolation in which her recent policy has placed her, while another is that infuential leaders of public opinion in China have recently been advocating very much what Mr. Lyons proposes.

Clad in a simple gingham dress, she looked very young and pale and slender with blue-green eyes like, clear lake water, and narrow brows curved like a swallow's wing. A face which seems a Ittle cold and immobile, until something amuses her, when her firm lips break into a delicious smile and her whole face seems to dash. and sparkle.

She has a delightful voice, very fresh and crisp, and an ab- solute lack of self-consciousness. Yet withal La Meri is very "sure of herself." But why not? She has been acclaimed "and applaud- ed in every country in the world, since her first public appearance a few years agol

Her early childhood was sper in San Antonio, Texas, and a Spanish music and dances formed the background for the study of dancing which has taken her to many famous Masters and almost every country under the sun.

She looks so fresh and gay it in hard to belleve that she comes to us after an extensive tour during which she has danced her way through the principle cities in Australia, and from there through Ceylon, India Malaya, and Jaya, and on to Manila, and now at fast we have a chance of seeing

her in Hong Kongl.

A TRUE GENIUS

that a true genius They say always possesses "an infinite capa- dity for taking pains," and a truly graat dancer needs a genius for.

her manager. Madame La Meri is lucky in having for her managër a husband who possesses this form of gentus, In the presentation of her dances he leaves nothing to chance. Her back-cloth, 'her floor- cloth of pale gray, her special lighting equipment, and above all her music all travel with her (No relying on a scratch local orchestra, where La Meri is соп concerned)-A wonderful super- amophone with an amplifier capable of filing the biggest hall' supplies the music, and further- more she has her own diacs

made for each dance, so that when she gives a native dance muse by native musicians provides the ac companiment.

Just as all her native costumes are authentic, so is the music also. (Continued on Page: 6.)
