FUTURE SCREEN DIARY OF LOCAL

TALENT

(BY EDWARD LAWRENCE).

Many old-timo actors, mourning the passing of the stock company, vaudeville and the decadence of the theatre, bredlet that the mo- tion picture will suffer in years to come from a lack of talent as these training schools decrease.

said Jack Conway, "Not so." speaking from twenty-three years of experience, both as an actor and director.

There are more talented young men and women coming to Holly- wood today than ever before.. There are no limits to talent. It can be found anywhere, in the country, in the city, wearing any kind of clothes, doing any kind of work, having any degree of edu- cation "-

Conway belleves the quality that makes movie stars is of more importance that training.

"Hollywood is equipped to train new actors and actresses," Conway declared: "It is of greater im- portance to find people having that certain something,' call. It personality, charm, glamour, or whatever you, will.”

about a couple of sweet youngsters and their adventures in parent hood, the new Fox plature, "The First Baby," is showing at the Alhambra Theatre to-day,

Featuring Johnny Downs, who was recently seen in Irvin Cobb'a "Everybody's Old Man." and Shir- ley Deane in the leading roles, the new picture is a true-to-lfe love story about Foung newlyweds, whose smallest worry is a baby boy, and whose biggest is "in-law” trouble.

Married on Johnny's five-dollar raise, they accede to the nagging of Marjorie Gateson, the girl's mother, and set up home with her. After the baby arrives, conditions become intolerable, so with the aid of Taylor Holmes, the girl's father, Johnny sets up a separate apart- ment.

THE MAN WHO FOUND HIMSELF

༔ ------ How a girl is responsible for the successful spiritual return of a derelict physician and surgeon is the poignant theme of "The Man Who Found Himself," which is showing at the Alhambra Theatre to-day.

Invested with principal roles are John Beal, John Fontaine, and Philip Huston Beal's performance is said to be in keeping with his sincere characterizations, and for a screen newcomer, the blonde and comely Miss Fontaine has been cheered like a veteran player.

ani

"The picture, Saratoga, s example," Conway "sald, referring to his new directorial effort.

"Clark Gable was a country boy, who had stage training, but strug- gled for several years before be- coming a star; Jean Harlow was a city girl, with no stage training, who became a star overnight, and Lionel Barrymore,, was the mem- ber of a great stage family, who would rather paint than act.”

Conway predicts that the next five years will see more budding stars than at any time in the his- tory of the movies.

"Why." smiled Conway, “I have a couple of youngsters, Pat and Mike, who don't want to go to col lege. They are planning to be movie stars."
