EDUCATION IN

HONG KONG

(No. 2.) St. Mary's School, Kowloon

We commenced, our series of articles on Education in Hong Kong last week by a description of the Church of England estab- "lishment,--The Boys' Dlocesan School, and we continue it to-day with a brief account of one of the biggest schools in the Colony for Roman Catholie girls, viz. St. Mary's School, Kowloon.

First opened about thirty-five years ago, it has grown enormous- ly, and at the new building. In Austin Road six hundred pupils are taken. This school is run by the Candssian Sisters (who have two other schools in their charge. viz. The Italian Convent School. Caine Rocc. and St. Francis School, Wanchai). It is for girls of all nationalities, but the majority of pupils are Chinese. Portuguesc. -Filipino, or Indian. Their ages range from five or six and among these tiny tots there are a number of boys, who, when old enough go on to the La Salle College), to girls. of nineteen who take their School Certificate and Matriculation Examination at the Hong Kong University.

EIGHTEEN CLASS-ROOMS All the subjecta are taught in English, and for benefit of children who do not know this language already there are numerous classes for reading, writing, and Engilsh dictation. It is charming to see

the very young children in their pretty class-room with gally coloured pictures on the walls, ali the attractive objects one connects. with Kindergarten studies. and pretty illustrated books to make learning easy. The summer unt- form of white with blue-edged sailors collar is very suitable and most becoming to the pupils. There are; in all, eighteen class rooms and all are pleasant. airy and well-lighted.----Therë “is”no” overcrowding, and the doors are of terrazzo which is beautifully cool

in this hot weather.

and

Specially planned desks chairs prevent their being too cold in winter ns each desk has 'a wooden floor-attachment so that the pupils stand on wood, and not on stone.
