CHAMPIONSHIP
FINALS
Sta. Lizana Wins
In Two Sets
AUSTIN'S EASY VICTORY
H. W. Austin and "Senorita A. Lisana won the British hard court singles "championships before a packed Centre Court at the West Hants Club in Bournemouth re cently. The fighters of the week, H. G. N. Lee and Miss M. C. Scriven could do little to break up the rhythm of such dominating strokes, although in Miss Scriven's case there might have been another story had she made the most of a commanding lead in the first set
Thus Austin, playing in his third successive final, regained a cham- plonship that he won as long ago as 1929 before F. J. Perry arose as the master of his generation to win it are times running, "More- over, Austin has not lost a set to anyone, and in anishing off Lee in a love set beat another past holder whose tactics and "flashing fore- hand had dumbfounded C. E. Hare, whose place in the draw made him second favourite for the final.
The last match. played in bril- Want sunshine, was not one to make us forget the shades of Perry. for Lee never really went after Austin as C. R. D. Tuckey had done, until he missed a "sitter" at set point in what must rank as the best single of a rather formal tournament. Austin, with his flaw- less length of drive, directed to the extremities of the court, was con- tent to remain quietly the master without pressing unduly
for his points
Sometimes, as Lee was forced to stretch for his shots and return them shorter and shorter and shot- ter, Austin worked himself into a volleying position, but he usually left the despairing attempts at the volleys to Lee, so that he might pass him the more surely. Lee's fighting forehand, often
used by.. dodging his backhand, was worth more than the four games he won, but Austin more than ever looked the first player of the country and knew how to use all the strokes and the lines.
DETERMINATION AND A PLAN
Miss Scriven, with two close de- feats by Sta. Lizana behind her. came to the women's singles final with grim determination and d plan that might have brought ner the match had she not broken down. That was when she led by Ave games to three and, having lost the next game, made a succes- son of unhappily wild strokes that put Sta. Lizana into the lead with- out losing a point. Until then, Sta. dent against the ever-changing Lizana had been none too con-
handled it firmly. At first Miss Scriven was using until she found the right moment to flash out her forchand winner or slow the ball away by neat volleys.
