LONDON BUSMEN TO NEW MINISTRY

RESUME WORK

STRIKE CALLED OFF AT MEETING

"An Honourable Settlement"

LONDON, MAY 27.

THE LONDON BUSMEN'S, STRIKE HAS BEEN SETTLED AND THE MEN HAVE BEEN INSTRUCTED TO RESUME WORK TO-MORROW.

The settlement was announced late last night following a Joint meeting at the Ministry of Labour.between the Transport Board and the executive of Transport Workers' Unlon who had assumed the responsibility for negotiations In connection with the dispute. The men will be reinstated in their former em- ployment and will operate and be paid on the present basfs unti) · a new agreement is drawn up. This new, agreement will be re- trospective from date of resumption.

In a statement made after the settlement was announced. Mr. Ernest Bevin, Secretary of the Union, described it as an honour- able settlement. He added an ex- pression of thanks to the public for the patience they had shown 'during the stilke, and referring in the strikera. he said the men had conducted themselves with soll- diarity, good discipline and good temper. There had been no in- cidents which would leave any bad feeling.

The average earnings of "drivers involved in the strike is 94 shillings and 8 pence per week and of con- ductors 87 shillings and 2 pence.

Altogether 25,000 then have been out for nearly four weeks and the loss in earnings therefore exceeded £450,000 against which must be sel £120.000 in strike allowances made by the Union. British Wireless.

London. May 28.

A meeting which it was hoped would lead to the settlement of the bus strike was held at the Ministry of Labour this evening, and attended by Mr. Ernest Bevin, Lord Ashfield and Mr. F. W. Leg- gett, the Officer.

According to an official state- ment by the Ministry of Labour. It has been agreed that pending the "conclusion of a new agreement, the men shall operate on the present basis. but a new agreement shall be made retrospective to the re- sumption of work. Revter.
