In conditions that were as near ideal as possible, one hun- dred and forty-three competitors took part in the Coronation Meeting of the Hong Kong Rife Club at their range yesterday afternoon at Kowloon City. The meeting proved an unqualified success, there being little wind blowing to handicap the competi- tors, although several found the heat more than a little distract- ing!

It was decided that the law must take its course and the condemned man will be hanged on June 11.

The case which came to be known as the "Charcoal Murder Case" aroused great public interest and the trial occupled four days at the Criminal Sessions before the Chief Justice, Sir Atholl Mac- Gregor.

The Crown case was conducted

by Mr. E. IL Warns. Assistant Attorney General, and the accused was 'defended by Hon.. Mr. Leo D'Almada junr., instructed by Mr. D. L. Střellett.

The jury komprised-Messrs. J. L. Robinson (foreman), "C. R Wilson, 'Yew Man-chlu.. B. W. Simmons. M.. B Reyer, E A. Kin- sey and F. J. H. Jenner.

The Imports and Exports Department (Statistical Branch) reports that the combined valnes of Imports and exports of merchandise as declared during the month of April, 1937 totalled $88.9 millions (£5.5 millions) as compared with $65.8 millions (£4,3 milions) in April, 1936.

In terms of local currency the total visible trade' of the Colony increased by 35.1 per cent. in April, 1937 as compared with April, 1936, and by 27.9 per cent. in terms of sterling. Imports of Merchandise totalled $54.8 millions (3.4 millions) as compared with $38.2 millions (£2.5 millions), and exports $34.1 millions (52.1 millions) as compared with $27.6 millions (£1.8 millions).
