died recently was another. The secret of this ability lies in two things. Arstly. "Personality" and secondly "Versatility." La Merl possesses both these qualities to a remarkable degree. Not only is she a dancer but a consummate actress and a mile and her un- canny control of her facial muscles. permits her to alter the appear- ance of her face to such an extent that it changes completely.

I

NEW YORK DEBUT

La Meri made her debut as classic dancer in New York in 1928, and created a sensation which led

to

her Arst triumphal tour of North and South America.-a tour of more than 100 recitals.

Europe first saw her the follow- ing year, when she appeared in the Max Reinhardt theatres in. Ber- lin and Vienna, followed by a tour of Europe which embraced Italy, Paris, Brussels and the Scandinav lan countries.

In February and March of last year, La Meri visited London for the first time and gave 23 recitals In the Arts Theatre and the Savoy Theatre in less than five weeks. During her London season Mr. A. D. M. Lengden, the young' Austra- llar Impressario, engaged ner for a tour of Australia and New Zea-.

BEAUTIFUL SETTINGS

At each concert, Mme. La Meri performs 13 or 14 dances, changing her costume completely for each dance. Mme. La Meri's stage sel- ting is very beautiful and consists of black velvet hangings. A pale grey floor cloth covers the stage, and takes the brilliant lights, which are projected from countless spot- lights, hidden in the wings. The lighting is changed for each dance, The full lighting equipment ae- companies the dancer on her tours, also a brilliant lighting expert, Averardo Bertocchi...

FAR EASTERN TOUR

La Meri opened her tour of the

East in Colombo where hundreds of people were unable to gain ad- mission at her opening concert re- cently. Her Singapore performance was sold out, arid she is to re- turn there for four extra shows as soon 2.3 her tour of Java finishes,

A feature of the La Meri re- citals is her magnificent castanet playing. The dancer spent two years in Seville studying the playing of the castanets; and to-day she is recognised as one of the finest exponents of this art. Her castanets are very resonant, but such is her control over them that she almost makes them speak-the mood. o

the playing varying from a subtle

soft trill to a vigorous fiery "Click" which resounds through the theatre..

Question "Asked In Commons

In the House of Commons" re- plying to Mr. A. C. Moreing. Lord Cranborne said that in response to British representations, the Jap- anese Government consistently disclaimed any responsibility for muggling in North China, con- tending that Japan cannot pre- vent a practice which was due to unreasonably high Chinese tarifs and defects in administration. Lord Cranborne added that the British Government made it plain they were unable to share the Japanese Government's view al- though there may be certain items In the Chinese tariff unduly high.
