Antloch questions. Alexandretta and Egypt's admission is assured. It is understood that the Spanish Government will refer the bombing of Guernica to the meeting of the Bureau of the Disarmament Conference which has caused some embarrassment among its promoters,

When the French pressed for a date for this meeting to be fixed they still hoped it might be possi- le to accomplish something in the matter of control of armaments If not their limitation. "To-day everybody feels that it would be like flogging a dead horse. Still the meeting has been called and something will have to be done..

It is expected that the British will advocate the advantages of budgetary publicity wherein they will be strongly supported by the French, while the Scandinavian elements will press for control of private manufacture and sale of arms.

More important than the Coun- cli's deliberations will be the pri vate talks between the various Foreign Ministers.

The conversations beguri In Lon-, don during Coronation week un- doubtedly will be continued: both in regard to the Western European situation and Central

Europe. Italy will not be represented either at the Council ar Assembly. Benter.

FORMER SHANGHAI

CONSULGENERAL

Vienna, May 22.

It is understood that Herr Her- man

Kriebel, recently German Consul-General in Shanghai, will succeed Herr von Papen, who is resigning from the post of German Ambassador to Austria,

Herr Kriebel is known to be one of Chancellor Hitler's most loyal and personal friends. He is a member of the Old Guard of the Nazi party and his appointment would mean increased influence of the party on Germany's diplomatic outlook in Austria. For while von Papen has attempted to obtain concession for Austrian Nazis by means of friendly negotiations with the Austrian Government. Nazi quarters abroad sabotage his work.

The Immediate

cause of Herr von Papen's resignation is under- stood to be the successful raid by the Austrian State police on the illegal Nazi headquarters in Vien- na. The police claimed to have discovered large quantities of material incriminating even the outstanding, German Kriebel quar ter- Reuter.

Italian Press Allegations

London, May 22.

Prospects of a truce in Spain are shaken by an article by Signor Gayda in the "Giornale d'Italia” alleging that mon-in- tervention arranged by the powers has broken down and that France and Russia are responsible.

Quoting evidently from official sources, Signor Gayda cites dates as recently as the end of April and beginning of May on which he alleges ships and other means of transport conveyed.. to Spain camouflaged freights, as for example thirty one tons of munitions labelled condensed milk" and several tons of ex- plosive chemicals dubbed "bicarbonate.”

The writer asserts that a Danish contrul officer threatened to resign because he was ignored when he protested against the freedom allowed, shipping craft on the Spanish coast which Signor Gayda declares, were occupied in leit activities.—Henter.
