ST. BEDE THE VENERABLE The day before" that on which Corpus Christi falls this year, is the anniversary of the death of the Venerable Bede--as we were reminded two years ago when his twelfth centenary was celebrated. Though he is honoured as a saint, the title of Venerable is still often given to him because, on account of the respect in which he was held during his life. it was given to him soon after his death. He was one of the most learned of Englishmen and his works com- prise all the knowledge of his time: Literature, Mathematics, Science, and the rest, but it is as a his- torian that he is best remembered. He spent all his life 'at Jarrow, and from his quiet monastery there exercised an influence on English and foreign scholarship that continued for many genera- tioris after his death.

RESEARCH WORK At the request of the Pelping Scientific Research Institute, the Rev. Maurice Burgaud, S.J., of the Observatory of Zikawel, Shanghai, is to undertake extensive measure- ments to determine with minute precision the exact valué of gravitational attraction at specl- fed points throughout the southern Provinces of China.

A similar study was made several years ago in the north by Father Pierre Lejay, S.J.. inventor of the Holweek-Lejay Pendulum, the most delicate instrument yet per- fected for such work

Tennyson's verse deals only with the famous charge of the Light Brigade against the Russian artil- lery on the heights of Balaclava during the Crimean war--an ac- tion which formu only the terrific climax of the filth story that is re- plete with thrills from start to finish, and presents a glamorous romance in which two brothers are rivals for the love of a beauti- ful girl.
