The Westminster Assembly of Divines, a Presbyterian body, met in the year 1623, but it failed to satisfy the demands of the Puritans. The new Presbyter' is but the 'old Priest writ large' they argued and the Solemn League and Coven- ant was signed and the spiritual autonomy of the Church was asserted. The whole question of toleration was raised in an acute form, to which the Presbyterian solution was one uniform system enforced and protected by, civil power..

The Independents protested that they trusted in the Spirit of God to lead them and all men into all truth. They also argued that the Congregational system made suf- ficient provision against heresies by the discipline in the hands of cach church or congregation, and Indeed they were prepared to yield more to the elvil powers than were the Presbyterians.

Charles the First ascended the throne and the Puritans were con- siderably relieved. but that sense was soon dissipated when Charles accepted the advice of Laud, and the consequent persecutions forced the Puritans Inte political as well

In Church polity Cromwell was a strict Independent and he sought for his army only those men who had some conscience in what they did." and when he found them in great numbers he was possessed not merely of an army but of a strong political machine as well. CATHOLIC NEWS

AND NOTES

Trinity Sunday

Trinity Sunday, which occurs to- morrow, is one of the best known Sundays of the year, because of the connection of the day with Law and University Terms. It is to St. Thomas a Becket, the Arch- bishop of Canterbury who was put to death by Henry II, that the day owes its prominence in England. In the early Church there was no special day on which the Holy Trinity was honoured, and was not, until the Arlans denied the mystery that special honour was given to God, One in Three. In the tenth century a Bishop of Llege composed a spe- claf Office in honour the Trinity and this came to be recited on the Sunday, after Pentecost. St. Tho- mas à Becket arranged that the same should be done in England, and that the feast should always be celebrated on this day.

CORPUS CHRISTI

The Thursday in Trinity Week is the feast of "Corpus Christi," "The Body of the Lord" It is the day specially set apart for honour to the Sacrament of the Blessed Eucharist. The obvious day for such celebration is the day of its Institution. Holy Thursday, but aa that falls during Holy Week; a sad time, and an unsuitable time for fit celebration, it is transferred to this week. The custom of holding processions on this day, or on the following Sunday is an old one, and takes its origin from a st older procession which used to be held in Rome in honour of Blessed sacrament about this time. It was from the idea of these proces- sions that there developed the idea of the Eucharistic Congress, such as was held with such magni- Acence in Manila this year.
