BREAK DOWN

One Vulnerable Point

MAKERS' POLICY TO BLAME

Ex-

Car owners still have one sub- stantiul grievance against the car makers. Cars grow steadily better year by year; they are easier to start (it was time that point was improved), caster to control, ensler and cheaper to maintain, and they are more reliable and less prone to give trouble, writes"

a Home correspondent,

But they have one vulnerable point. The electrical equipment gets more complete and elaborate is new gadgets are added-me- chanical indicators, dual

screen wipers and so forth, but it is not equal to the rest in dependability,

This is, I think, common perience, and not by any means contined to low-priced cars. I have a correspondent rightly indig nant because his £500 car has needed three screen-wiper motors in three years and the electrical wiring renewed from headlights to tail lamp after 35.000 miles.

WHAT R.A.C. ANALYSIS SHOWS

The annual R.A.C. analysis of breakdowns on the road

has re- gularly indicated the same weak- ness. In 1935 failure of the elec-. trical equipment, always the most common cause, was responsible in 26 per cent. of cases. Motoring writers

are not sup- posed to talk of cars breaking down; criticism is declared to be bad for the reputations of British cars. For this particular criticism the manufacturers themselves are collectively to blame, and they alone.
