THE SHARE
MARKET
Harriman's Weekly Report
Hongkong, 15th May, 1937. Messrs. G. A Harriman & Co.'s share report and market review Issued at noon to-day, status: --
This being Corgnation week, bu- siness, and especially that of stocks and shares has been almost entire- ly eclipsed by the Empire-wide celebrations. So we have but little. to write about what can at best, be described as a dormant market.
Manila has had its now usual ups downs with the "downs" and slightly out-doing the "ups", so that over the week quotations are again lower.
Small business has been trans- in "lighting". shares with acted sales reported in Electrics at. 8602 und 61 and China Lights (old) at 916 $12.50 $14.40 and the "New" at $14. Trams have been a firm spot up to $15. The huge crowds using this form of transport must have improved this week's receipts to almost re- cord proportions. It is quite evid- ent too that the electric supply companies are benefitting consider- ably from the Coronation. Tele- phones (old) are wanted, at 29.60 and the New remain around $12). Star Feriles, in spite of the enorm- cus traffe they must be carrying are available at $86 and Yaumati Ferries
are nominally 828. We Imagine buying attention will be directed to our utility shares, after the holidays.

MINERS WHO HAVE LOST THEIR SKILL
Plan To Find Less Expert Work
61
Lists of unemployed mineworkers registered at labour exchanges in different parts of the country are to be carefully revised in the light: of the present scarcity of skilled workers.
"Many miners registered as avall- able for various grades of work are found to he unsuitable when engaged. Some have grown too old, others," through lack of prac- tice, have ceased to hold their skill Yet others are unfamiliar with modern machinery and methods and can no longer fill positions in the grades for which they are re- gistered.

A start on the revision has been No, 10, Des Voeux Road, Central made in the Consett district. of Durham where coalowners and re- presentatives of the workers have set up a panel in collaboration with
the manager of the local labour exchange. The name of each miner on the list is to be examined separately, to ascertain for what work the man is actually atted.
Other districts are setting op similar committees "and it is ex- pected that eventually the indus try throughout the country will have to undertake a similar course. -SKILLED MEN SCARCE Part of the shortage of skilled workers in some districts, has been met by the transfer of miners from other areas. Little further rellet can be obtained by this method. There is also a scarcity of boys for pit work, made more acute by the absorption of Juvenile workers in- to other, industries, particularly engineering.
The number of skilled coalgetters is small compared with the total number of mineworkers. For every man employed at the coal face there are many others engaged in bringing the coal to the surface and in dealing with it there.
A few weeks ago the total num- ber of unemployed mineworkers had fallen to 103,000 in England and Wales. - Since then the num- ber has been reduced, and it may be necessary for the classes from which recruitment is now permilt ted to be extended.
A significant indication of the present state of the industry is at M.Y. 58,150,554 and exports at provided by the weekly returns of
