Mr. Cyril Chumpkin, the well- known local bullion broker' and a
prominent member of the Hong Kong 'A.D.C.. gave "an interesting talk over the wireless last night, his
subject being "Old Theatre Memories in Hồng Kong" ME Champkin said:—
The A.D.O. was founded in 1844. Military Officers were very pro- minent in its early productions, and it therefore seems not un- it was originally a likely that military venture that later out- grew its confinement and deve- loped into its present form-a Club for limited general member- ship. Prior to 1855 the Club was producing plays under some dis- abilities in what was called the Victoria Theatre.
NO RECORDS We have, unfortunately, no re- cord of the plays produced in this primitive playhouse, Examination of the four-page newsprints of the Afiles yield no information in this particular. Sl, we know that 'atmosphere counts for much in drama and the possibilities of "Marla Martin, or The Murder in the Red Barn" can hardly have been overlooked, while the trap- door facilities for dealing with thất chief impediment to the wider popularity of homicide-the dis- posal of the body-would have obvious advantages in the presen- tation of that old favourite "Sweeny Todd, The Demon Bar-
