In his presidential address at the annual meeting of the Federa tlon of British Industries recently, Lord Hirst, who was unanimously re-elected president for a further year of office, said they must all realize that the Government's de fence programme would be a cost. ly business, and it could have been but little surprise that the Chancellor of the Exchequer had found it necessary to increase taxation.
The alterations which he was making. added Lord Hirst, would receive the consideration of their Taxation Committee, and if they had any views to put forward he was sure they would receive every consideration from the Chancellor. The Chancellor's proposals were based upon his bellef in the con- tinued prosperity of industry and of business generally." Lord Hirst said he believed that Mr. Cham- berlain was fully justified in mak- ing that assumption. There were certain courses open to the Chan- cellor by which he could obtain the money which the country re- quired. He bad chosen a simple and fair method, which Lord Hirst said he was personally prepared to accept under present conditions.
