The Ages

of

Hopemaking is a trade that goes back to the earliest days of history. Ropes made of palm have been found in the tomb of Ben-Hassan, the Egyptian of 3000 B.C., and ou the walls of some of these tombs the process of preparing hemp for ropemaking is depicted. In a tomb at Thebes, about the time Thotmes 111, 1000 B.C., there is shown a group twisting thongs of leather into ropes.

At the Music Borbonico. at Naples there is a piece of bronze wire rope nearly 15 ft. long and about an inch in circumference, which was taken from the exeava- tions at Pompeii and probably dates from about 600 B.C...

The craft of wire rope making. according to British Ropes Ltd. seems to have been lost for a con- siderable period, for it is not until 1822 that the earliest practical ap- plication of wire rope appears in the construction of a suspension bridge at Geneva. This, rope was not even twisted, but consisted of a bundle of parallel wires wound spirally with fine wire,"
