Report On Water Supply Of Hong Kong
Position Officially Described
"As "Serious"
-A report on the water supply of Hong Kong prepared by Mr. W. Woodward, B.Sc., A. M. Inst., C.E.. acting Executive Engineer, Water- Sub-Dept.. works matritenance P.W.D., and which was" tabled at
"This Colohy has suffered almost continuously from its earliest days from water shortages, the reasons for which have been mostly fin- |ancial"," Mr. Woodward concludes. Mr. A. B. Purves, Executive En-
边
states:
minute
"The programme of work out ned... is a formidable one and represents an outlay of probably $5,000,000. The time required to complete these works will depend on the staff provided. The present staff of the Water Works Construc- tion Sub-department is quite in- adequate to carry out this pro- gramme within a reasonable time and could deal only with the items of greatest urgency......
The position in Kowloon is not so serious as on the island.
The Director of Public Works re- veals the proposals for works which should be pushed on as "early 25 possible are as follows:
the Legislative Council yesterdaygineer of the Waterworks Branch, disclosed that unless water res
ал accompanying trictions are again to become a permanent evli, an almost Im- mediate expenditure of $3,185,000 will be required on water works in the Colony. Government must also enviauge the construction, at no distant date, of another huge reservoir in the New Territories.
Despite completion of Jubilee Reservoir, the position in Hong Kong has become so acute that it 1s officially described as "serious." Although $20,000,000 has been spent on new waterworks from 1920-1935, the safety margin be- tween resources and requirements for a constant supply is very smail
The report reveals that water consumption in Hong Kong has more than doubled in the last de- cade,, and estimates that the daily consumption in 1941 will treble the consumption of 1926.
HARBOUR PIPE. DANGER The Report reveals that any damage to the two cross-harbour pipe lines would leave the Island. in a serious position. These lines, It is stated by Mr. Woodward, form | a vulnerable section of the Island's "lines of communication.”
Examination has revealed that the 12 inch pipelines laid across the harbour in 1929-30 has almost reached the limit of its useful life. Mr. Woodward recommends that the present 18 inch main should be provided, as early as possible, with a more permanent protective coat- ing to arrest corrosion.
FUNERAL OF
SERGT. BROWN
Whitfield Barracks Tragedy
The funeral of Sergeant W. P. Brown, of the Corps Military Po- lice, who died under tragic cir- cumstances at Whitfield Barracks early on Tuesday morning, took place at the Roman Catholic Cemetery yesterday when FT. Page, rector of St. Margaret's Church, took the service. The funeral was largely attended by military units as well as friends of the deceased.
Bergt. Brown was found dead in his room at Whitfield Barracks early-on Tuesday morning with a deep gash across his throat which
extended almost from ear to ear. Near the body was a blood-stain- ed razor and there is every in- dication that the man took his
own life.
Bergt. Brown had lately been very depressed and in a poor state of health, owing partly to the cimate and partly to a recurrence of old war wounds: He was also worried by the fact that his daughter was recently invalided
home.
Sergt. Brown, who lived at 32 Hankow Road, had been in Hong Kong for 18 months and was very popular with those who knew him. The widow and three children are leaving for home by the
