THIRD EXTRA RACE MEETING

Good Racing Promised:

Punters' Difficult Task

(BY “LAST QUARTER")

with

The racing public will undoubtedly look enthusiam to the programme to be presented at the Third Extra Race Meeting of the Hong Kong Jockey Club at the Happy Valley to-morrow. With eight handicap events out of a total of nine races, the task of spotting winners are evenly matched and sev- eral of the ponies entered are definitely in the running for honours. This feature should more than reflect itself on the pari-mutuel and I fully anticipate a large turn over in the bet-. fing with good dividends returned, even on favourites.

The rails have been moved in to; their old position and consequent- ly the home stretch will be some- what narrow, but as the fields will not be as large as at the Annual Mecting this change should not inconvenience the starters to any great extent. As in the past, my Anal selections will appear on Saturday morning after I have had the opportunity of seeing the various candidates put the finish ing touches to their, training, and in the meantime I will confine my comments to the chances of the probable starters, their condition and such other pertinent informa- tion relative to the meeting.

EXPLANATION FOR JAPAN'S REFUSAL TO JOIN LONDON TREATY LIMITATION

Tokyo, April · 8.

Information obtained by the Japanese naval Intelligence service that the Soviet Union is experi- menting with 18-inch naval guns, described as the most formidable weapon of its kind ever known to the world, is the reason being given here privately by Japanese to explain why Japan is against par- ticipation in the London naval limitation agreement, it was learned to-day from an authoritative

source.

IT IS NOT YET KNOWN EVEN WHETHER A SINGLE 18-INCH GUN' HAS BEEN MOUNT-

ED ON A SOVIET WARSHIP, BUT JAPANESE QUARTERS POINT OUT THAT SUCH A WEAPON COULD OUTFIRE ANY WARSHIP OF THE JAPANESE NAVY.

"LEADERS AND READERS GIVE VIEWS

Endorsement of the policy expounded in the leading article of "The Hong Kong Daily Press" yesterday was forthcoming from leaders of commerce and readers,

It is our contention that the vast mass of hoardings in Hong Kong and Kowloon are disfiguring, unsightly and grotes- que, and, for the most part, from the point of view, of ad- vertising, they are practically impotent because of their incon- gruity and monotony of display.

In support of our polley wa" publish letters from readers and Interviews wherein are expressed opinions which we feel are. shared by those in the community who have a sense of civie pride and business acumen.-The Editor.
