The machinery space is situated amid- ships and forward of this Is -a roomy compartment for accom- modation of workmen while at the after end is a cargo hold for carriage of materials and stores. The crew space is In the .fore- castle. with 27 entrance com- panionway on deck, Stax cabin, galley, and lavatories are pro- vided in a large deck house on the forward deck. The navigating bridge is built over the forward deckhouse.

This vessel embodies many of the most recent, developments in scientific design and methods of construction.

ELECTRIC WELDED The steel hull is entirely electric welded and the structure" has been specially, designed to give

the most efficient and economical arrangement of welded connec- tions. The vessel is a splendid example of recent progress in welded ship construction.

A Kort Nozzle has been fitted round. propeller to give increased tow-rope pull. This nozzle is the patent of Mr. Ludwig Kort of Hanover, and is designed to give Improved performance when tow- ing. Towing trials were carried out before and after atting this Kort note and it was found that an increase in tow-rope pull was obtained after Kort Nozzle Was Atted.

The towing hook is of special design and the usual buffer spring is replaced by a hydraulic ram which registers this tow-rope puli in tons on an indicator on the navigating bridge.

The main propelling machinery is a Sulzer Diesel Engine built by the Taikoo Dockyard and En- gineering Co., Ltd. under special licence from Sulzer Bros., Winter- thur.

THE ENGINE The engine is" of five-cylinder, single-acting. two-stroke. cross- head type fitted with auxiliary scavenge porups to give a degree of supercharge. The cylinders and heads are fresh water cooled. and all pumpe for fresh water circulating, salt water circulating, and bilge service are attached to main engine, as also the lubricat ing oil pump and air compressors. On trial the engine developed 250 BHP. at $20 R.P.M. The speed on trial was 104 knots."
