BETTER UNDERSTANDING The Society has always stood for the better understanding of the
problems affecting pencer During the spring of 1936 a group met to discuss those articles of the Covenant of the League
which mest bear upon the subject. These are Articles X, XI, XV, XVI and XIX, especially the latter, two. These discusalons were most help-.: ful and those who attended real- ised, as possibly they had not done before, the dimculties confronting the League in its onerous task.
During the autumn a meeting was held at which Miss Rendall spoke on the "Revision of Trea- ties,"
Miss
also spoke Duncan shortly on the Pacide Conference held at the Yosemite Valley. Aliu- sion may also be made to the lecture by Miss Cryan held early In January of this year, when she spoke on the Growth of Internä- crowded tional Law; while the meeting held only a fortnight ago, at which Professor P. C. Chang spoke on Conflicting Views on the Cultural Changes in China, is still fresh in the minds of many pre- sent at this meeting.
During the autumn the Peace Essay Competition was again held.
or This competition is jointly ganised by the Hong Kong Peace Group and the League of Nations Society, Competitors are drawn from a good number of schools in the Colony. The organisation en- talls a great amount of work, and the mere correction of the great number of essays in Chinese as well as in English is no small mat ter. The prizes were distributed at St. Joseph's College, on Jan. 26 of this year; and on this occasion you. Sir. spoke on the sublect of Peace to a large gathering of pupiis from various schools, To those who took any part in the arrange ments for this essay we owe our thanks, and we trust that thla year there will also be held a similar competition.
Correspondences between girls and boys in Hong Kong and abroad has been maintained. There
resolution was adopted. The An ancial report was seconded by the Hon. Dr. Kotewall,

I regard it a real privilege, as your President, to address you at this the annual meeting of the Society. I have always been in- terested in the subject of peace. In fact that interest Roes as far. back as the establishment of the League of Nations. For this rea- son I have come this afternoon to give you peace-lovers my whole hearted support by actively parti- cipating in your discussions to- day. (Appause).
There are just two points which I would like to emphasise The first is a general one and deals with the League of Nations and the peace of the world as a whole. The second deals with the peace of a part of the world, namely, the Far East.
Let me take the first point first. Though the League of Nations has not succeeded in preventing wars started by Great Powers, yet its value in international life is un-- questionable. Moreover the record of the League must not be judged in the light of the difficult inter- national situation in which it functioned, and, in any case, its past shortcomings must not blind us to its great potentialities.
EXISTENCE JUSTIFIED
In fact during the space of only 17 years the League has trans- formed the face of the earth, espe- cially in three directions.
First of all, Geneva has become, within our own generation, a cen- tre for the articulation of the world's conscience and the expres➡ sion of the world's opinion. That alone. justifies the League's existence. (Applause). Without it the new world community will have no platform or parliament to are, well over 100 such correspon-express its views. dences being carried on, and all Secondly, the League has * this helps to bring about a feeling proud and noble record of co-
