IRELAND'S THREE
NEWCOMERS
Effort To Improve Scrummaging
Some surprise has been caused in Irish
Irish Rugby circles by the action of the Selection Committee in dropping three players from the victorious Irish fifteen for the match against Wales at Bel- fast, writes a correspondent in the "Dally Telegraph." It was felt by many that the wiser polley would have been to leave a win- ning team undisturbed.
When one considers the matter, however, it is easy enough to understand the decision. It is generally agreed that it was the faflure of the forwards in the set scrums which cost Ireland vlc- tory at Twickenham and the selectors, while not making any changes, looked forward to seeing a definite, Improvement in this phase of the play against Scotland. That they were disappointed there is no doubt, for Scotland held an advantage which gradually increased as the game went on.
The statisticians do not appear to have been as busy as usual. My own figures are rather approximate. but they are.. Scotland 19, Irè land 16, in the first half, and Seat- land 21. Ireland 14, in second half. When one reflects that this same Scottish pack were cutscrummaged by Wales at Swansea the need for changes in the Irish side becomes obvious.
SECOND ROW BLAMED ..
The blame for the ineffective scrummaging was, apparently, laid on the second row and the axe fell- upon J. ·Russell and S. Deering. There was no more hearty player in loose mauls than Deering, while Russell was almost unstoppable un- der ten yards when he got the ball. Both will be missed, as will ̊C. R. Graves.. though one was rather more prepared for, the change which brings in E. Ryan in place of the later. Graves has had ✨ good innings and there were signs that his play was beginning to lack
And what of the newcomers? All three are big mén. C. J. Reidy ex- ceptionally so, and he and R. B. Mayne should not only improve the scrummaging power of the pack, but should also be a big asset in the line-outs. In which both men excel.

QUALITY OF MELODY The Chinese, during the 5th cen- tury realized the main principle of composition. Their music paid special attention to the quality of melody. The three dimensions in music, sald Mr. Levia, are time, melody and harmony. All music has three motions; rising, falling or Howing on a level. The Chinese composed music strictly according to form and then superimposed the emotional values. It is the true classical form, the purest the world has even known, and the most advanced, form of composition, It is the music, not the words, that govern the meaning in Chinese ancient music. The words are fill- ed into the musical pattern.
