Few outside the navy seem to have noticed that a recent fleet order banished the word "sloop" from the official vocabulary, states the "Manchester Guardian.” THE abrupt but pleasant-sounding word, with its musical suggestion of waves slapping away from a fast-moving prow, or a patrol-bont snooping around "în "search of smuggiera or forcig foe, has long survived the days of sail. It is sad that the march of machanics has finally vanquished it. One had thought that the navy, which holds tightly to so many of its an- cient names, and customs amidst the machinery of oil, steam, and electricity, would not have thrown overboard such a fine moriosyllable smacking of the sea, with its afallations to the English shallop, the French chaloupe, the Spanish Or if you wish itinerary can be.

sible etymological connection with the Teutonic schleifer, meaning to glide, to creep, to slip...
But the departmental mind, as is dally proved in departmental literature, has hó real appreciation of the subtle beauty of English, and usually prefers abstract ver- bosity to clear brevity, Latin to Baxon words. So the order has gone forth that in future "patrol sloops" shall be "escort' vessels" and "coastal sloops" shall be "patrol vessels." The advantage of the change is not obvious to the layman. Perhaps one may hope that sailors will remember what the Admiralty has ordered them to forget, and that they will still call a sloop a sloop whenever the officials of Whitehall are not Istening.
J
WHAT WAS A SLOOP? To be sure, it is not easy to dis cover exactly what "was" a sloop. except that it was a smallish unit of the feet used for patrol and re- connaissance and minor opera- tions. An early nineteenth-century description of a sloop-of-war was "a vessel of whatever rig between a corvette and a gun-vessel and ordinarily constituting the com- mand of a commander." Mr. Mid- shipman Easy's exploits were some- times carried out in that sort of vessel, though one does not re-. member the word sloop in the text, The Aurora was certainly a frigate, and the Ribiera, in which he made his last adventure, was a brigantine.
Anyway, about that period a sloop-carrier between ten and eighteen guns had one mast and difered, according to old authori- ties, from a cutter only in having a fixed bowsprit and somewhat smaller sails in proportion to the hull. A modern description classi- fled a sloop as the smallest type of cruiser, of about 1,400 tons or less, and capable of 15 knots..
