Col. J.L. Sleeman Entertained To Luncheon
FINEST HEADQUARTERS IN EMPIRE
The magalßcent work that is being done by St. John Ambu-" lance Brigade in the cause of humanity throughout the world was stressed by Col. James L. Sleeman, C.R., C.M.G., C.B.E., MV.O Chief Commissioner of St. John Ambulance Brigade Overseas, when speaking at a luncheon given in his honour at the Chinese Merchants Club, China Buliding, yesterday,
Colonel Sleeman paid warm tribute to the representatives of the Chinese community for their generous assistance without which, he felt sure, the work of the Brigade could not possibly have succeeded in Hong Kong. "You have given this work one of the finest headquarters which I have seen in the whole of my Empire tour and that alone puts Hong Kong very high on the map of ambulance service," he said.
The host of the Chinese lun- cheon was the Hon. Dr. Li Shu- Ian and among the guests present, besides the guest of honour, were Sir Robert Ho Tung. the Hon. Dr. R. H Kotewall, C.M.G., the Hon. Mr. R. A. C. North, the" Hon. Mr. M. K. Lỗ, the Hon. Mr. T. N. Chau, the Hon. Dr. A. R. Wellington, C.M.G.. Professor W. I. Gerrurd.. O.B.E. Mr. Alfred Morris, Director of Ambulance. Mr. Ho Kom-tong, Q.B.E., Mr.
Li Yau-tsun, C.B.E.. Prof. WC. W. Nixon, Mr. T. A. Mitchell, Mr. Tang Shiu-kin. M.B.E., and Mr. J. Ralston.
A GREAT CAUSE Following luncheon, the Hon. Dr. Li Shu-fan, in proposing a toast
to the health said:-
01 Col.
Sleeman,
It is a gratification to me that my humble Invitation to this lun- cheon is so well responded to, Imus consider a clear testimonY the popularity of the great cause which my guest of honour,
"D
Sleeman said that the great bro- therhood of St. John Ambulance which numbered Chinese, Indians, Africans, Englishmen, Australians, Canadians and every branch of the British Empire, was now 100.000 strong and they have saved the lives of over 2,000 people a year, and treated 500,000 cases a year, all for nothing. It was the only service in the world, that he knew of that size, with 100,000 trained diaciplined men and nurses giving their services free, One might ask why WIS this done? The answer, sald Col. Sleeman, was that it was traditional."
"Here in Hong Kong." added 'Col.
