NOVEL WAY OF KEEPING FIT BY BLACKPOOL PLAYER

Very often boxers have been known to take the queerest types of exercise as part of their training, but professional soccer players, are sticklers, as a rule, for the uniform method, states Reuter.

The best training idea for a goal-keeper that has yet been 'devised is the one undertaken by the young Blackpool', keeper, Roxburgh. In his amateur days Roxburgh did not get a great "deal of opportunity to practise beyond the ordinary matches of his team. But this was by no means enough for this budding youngster. So he went along to one of the stalls on the amuse- ment ground and volunteered for action.

The stall was, of course, one of the old, original score if you can" or kick and shy stalls. There 20-year old John Roxburgh used to pit his skill, with slight odds against him, with that of the public in general.

Roxburgh stood up to it for quite a spell because he liked it and he found that, the idea was sound.

Wales Beat Ireland To

Be International Champions

"

Wrexham, Mar. 17.

The International Soccer match between Wales and Ireland, before a crowd of 25.000, was played in beautifully sunny wea- ther here to-day and resulted in a win for Walea by 4 goals to one Wales have thus won the championship for the year.

Ireland played more impressive football in the early stages with Griffiths outstanding in the Welsh defence. Bryn Jones, the Weish Inside-left scored the first goal in the 25th minute of the game after a clever combined movement. After this set back the Irish forwards seemed to lose confidence while the Welsh players showed a steady improvement as the game went on After play had been in progress for 32 minutes Glover, the Welsh centre-forward, scored to give his side a 2-0 lead and half-time came with no change in the score.

2

Almost immediately after the resumption Glover netted again, a fine pass from Warren providing him with an opportun- ity which he was only to eager too accept.

Then Ireland came into the picture for, during a goal-month meles, the Welsh goal-keaper dropped the ball and Stevenson. the Irish Inside-left scored. This was, however, all that the Irish team could do and just before the end Warren, on the left wing, reored the fourth goal for Wales who emerged comfortable win-

OXFORD SHOW GOOD FORM

Boat Race Crew Practice

London, Mar. 17. In a boat-race practice to-day, Oxford rowed from Barnes Bridge to Hammersmith Bridge in 7 min- utes 42 seconds despite encounter- ing stiff headwind.

The latter part of the row was a record, the previous best being 7 minutes 45 seconds accomplished by the Oxford crew in 1933.

The Oxford eight to-day moved like a train, but the Cambridge President afterwards told "Reuter" that he thinks Cambridge remain win next strong favourites to Wednesday.--- Reuter.

"An amalgamation nearly came about," he said, "in 1904, when the late Mr. S. 1. King was hon. secre- tary of the Casuals. I have great hopes that this time the move will be successful."

Here are the main points in the proposed fusion, which, before it can come about, must be agreed to by extraordinary general meet- ings of the two clubs.

That of the Casuals will take place at the First Avenue Hotel, Holborn, on Tuesday, March 2, and a whip has been sent to every member of the club asking that the utmost endeavour is made to attend.

The FA Cup, in which the Corinthians have competed since 1922-8, and the FA. Amateur Cup which the Casuals won last sea- son, would again, be competed for.

President members of both clubs would become members of the new club without, distinction, if desired. The colours of the club will be, it is suggested, a blue background representing the Corinthians, with chocolate stripes of

THE OFFICIALS

If the amalgamation takes place Mr. R. T. Bquire, the Corinthian, is to be asked to be the first presid- ent; Mr. F. H. Ewer, the amatour international, would be proposed as the hon treasurer; and Mr. F. G. I Packington, the present hon. secretary of the Casuals may be the new hon: secretary of the amalgamated clubs.

A new ground is being sought in Bouth East London where the club could play home matches. It la Improbable that the amal- gamation will take place for some time.
