Practical Joke That Ended In Fatal Fight

CRIMINAL SESSIONS TRIAL

The story that lay behind a practical joke which ended in a fatal fight in the Wanchal district on the night of January 27, was unfolded by Mr. E., Williams, Assisiant Attorney General, at the Criminal Sessions yesterday when Wong Chuen, 21-year- old paint scraper, was arraigned before the Chief Justice. Sir Atholl MacGregor, and a jury, on a charge of the manslaughter of Ah Hung, aged about 25 years.

The Assistant General related that the accused and deceased were employed in the Naval Yard as paint scrapers and lived at No. 44. Ship Street, where they were also paid their wages. At 9 a.m. on the morning of January 27, the deceased, accused and, another paint scraper were working to- gether in the Naval Yard, boiling resin, when a quarrel broke out between the accused and the de- ceased over a practical joke. When they had finshed work for the day; and had returned to No. 44. Ship Street. they" again had words. De- ceased went out for a hearty meal and returned shortly before 7 p.m. They continued with the quarrel and finally had blows. The deceased was getting the better of the fight and the accused ran away and returned later with o party of men who appeared to be strangers to the floor. The accused was arrested three or four days later and on medical examination a slight redness was found on the knee cap.

When charged, the accused sald that the deceased struck him at the Naval Yard and covered his head with a box. On leaving the yard, the deceased warned him to be careful. "I did not kill him. It was 'Ah Fuk who told Ah Wah to strike him," he added.

At the Pollce Court, the accused reserved his defence.

Evidence was then called by Mr. Williams.

THE VERDICT

The accused in the witness stand, denied that he took a gang with him to beat the deceased. The other men who took part were passers-by.

The jury retired at 408 p.m. and returned at 4.35 p.m. with a 5-2- verdict of guilty and recommended mercy.
