Successful Function At

Peninsula Hotel

LADY CALDECOTT PRESENTED WITH SPRAY OF SHAMROCK

Irishmen in the Colony foregathered in large numbers" with their indies at the Paninsula Hotel last night when the annual Ball of the St. Patrick's Society was held. The unique event of having two Irish Regiments in the Colony contributed In no small measure to the success of the function.

The Rose Room and the Roof Garden, were used for dancing and over 600 were present being the largest number since the inaugural Ball in 1931 when over 700 attended.

An interesting resume of the history of the Hong Kong and Kowloon Whart and Godown Company, Limited since its com- mencement in 1886, was given by the Hon. Mr. J. J. Paterson when he presided at the fiftieth ordinary unanal meeting of the' Com- pany held in, the board room of Messrs. Jardine, Matheson and Company Limited, yesterday morning.

In the course of his review of the past year, the Chairman remarked that the American shipping strike hit the Company very severely and they were without shipping from the United States for three and a half months.

U.S. SHIPPING STRIKE The American shipping strike hit us very severely, the last American ship to call with cargo In 1936 did so on 15th November. The "President, Hoover" came back to us on 28th February and thus you will observe we were without any shipping from the United Staten for three and a half months, six weeks of this lack being in the year under review and two months in 1957.
