V: Christianity In The First Four Centuries
(BY SCRUTATOR)
The only really new element which) Christianity introduced into the religion of Judaism was Jesus himself, but that element was sufficient to, transform everything, for his influence over his followers was a living power, It is very pleasing and indeed, very engy, to argue as some historians do, that the world was waiting for Christianity when it appeared in the first century, that its advent met a conscious need of the world. That is not strictly true. The whole tendency to separate Christianity from the world into which it came is futile and misleading.
In the first place, what was this 'Christianity' which thus, miraculously, If one is to believe certain historians, descended upon mankind? It was, as we have remarked above, nothing more nor less than the person of Jesus. It was not a completely developed system of doctrine and institution, but a way, a spirit -a spirit which only gradually clothed itself with a body, which, as always happens, was evolved from the elements already exisi-,, Ing in the world.
Its development was conditioned by these two factors precisely, the nature of the spirit itself, and whats the spirit could use of the material surrounding it. It was an organic and not a mechanical development. Christianity and the world were not two separate en- tities which happened to come together and to find each other amazingly suitable for coalescence. "The word was made fesh' certain- ly. but the word' was spirit and took the form which that which was already flesh could under- stand.
**
Thus event its bith was in a sense, conditioned by its environ- ment, as its development was later conditioned by the nature of the world. geographically and philoso- phically, in which it grew during the early Christian centuries and
later.

which must continually stand the test of work and ex- perience. The Twelve as such, did not occupy any official position in the Church in Jerusalem or any where else; their importance was not due to any official appoint- ment but to their own immediate experience of Jesus and to the fact that he had chosen them to be his friends. They owed whatever dignity and authority they pos- sessed to their own spiritual char- acter. Such a one was James, to whom, according to Hegesippus, 'It was alone permitted to enter the holy place. In fact on account of, his great righteousness he was
