WORST BLIZZARDS IN

HISTORY

Lorry Drivers Rendered Unconscious

London, March 12.

Snowdrifts thirty feet deep in many parts of Durham bave snow-blocked the roads in many villages from Wales to Yorkshire. Isolating thousands of motorists and other people.

Telephone wires have broken down, lorries and cars have been.. abandoned, and ten lorry drivers have been sent to hospital in an unconscious condition in blinding snow..

On entering port, the flagship fired a salute of 21 guns to the country which was returned by Fort Blackhead,

H.M.S. Tamar then fired a salute of 15 guns to the French com- mander-in-chief which was re piled to by the Lainotte Picquet with I guns.

on March 20.

These are some of the features of the worst blizzards remembered in the Midlands and North Eng- land.

The snowstorms began on Febru- ary 28 and were never really 'dis- persed.

At Weardale there has been con- tinuous snow for thirteen days.

Thousands of sheep have been lost at one place in Durham. It is believed that three layers of sheep were burled above each other. One farmer only saved seventeen out of a thousand animals.

On the other hand in the South of Eng and a mild spell of weathan has recurned to the country which has been water-logged by rain and. melted snow.

JEWISH WOMEN'S SECTION LEADER ANNOYED

New York, March 12. The exchanges of compliments beween Mayo La Guardia and the German press since the former addressed a women's meeting and referred to Chancellor Hitler as a brown-shirted" fana- tle are daily growing more and more heated and have already led to reciprocal protests by the German and United States Governments, but though there has been much official frowning the Americans are getting quite a good laugh out of the incident.

Mayor La Guardia's description of Herr Hite as a brown-shirted fanatic was outmatched when Hitler's paper "Angriff" described the water who attended La Guardia's meeting as "women of the streets gathered to be entertained by the pimp and procurer mayor."

FIRST BROADCAST FROM A BRITISH WARSHIP

SUGGESTION TO LOCAL AUTHORITIES

It is recognised by those expertly trained to judge, that with- in the Empire the broadcasting system which has been developed in Australia is tinrivalled for its reneral excellence. Froma first-hand knowledge of this system it may fairly be stated that the basis for this truly remarkable success can be epitomised in the eatch-line:-Showmanship but not sensationalism, and a re- cent experiment effected with striking success by the Australian Broadcasting Commission is particularly pertinent here, in view of the great interest which is being manifested In the combined manoeuvres which will commence next week with Hong Kong as the pivot of action.

Here are the facts as forwarded to the Editor of this newf- paper by the management of the A.B.C; The first broadcast from a Bri- tish. warship took place on Man-
