SCALE OFFENSIVE
TWO-SIDED ATTACK
ON CAPITAL
Defenders Retreat With Heavy Losses
Paris, March 9.
The Spanish Nationalists to-day began a large scale offensive on the south-east and north of Madrid, according to reports here. The Nationalist commanders, the messages point out, seriously intend to interrupt the communications of the capital with the surrounding country by a simultaneous attack from two sides.
Shortly after opening of the attack in the south-east, the Nationalists succeeded in inflicting a decisive defeat on the de- fenders. The latter were compelled to relinquish their positions at Algora Mirabanco, suffering extremely heavy losses during the retreat-Transocean News Service.

ARMS VESSEL DESTROYED
Insurgent Watch Rewarded
London, Mar. 9. The Spanish insurgents have reason for glee over the sinking of the Mar Cantabrico. They have been swearing to "get her "since January 6 when she frenzledly loaded a £500,000 cargo of muni- tions for the Spanish Government and slipped out of New York har bour, chased by a revenue cutter, a few hours before Congress was able to rush through legislation placing an embargo on war materials for Spain.
She was last reported at Vera Cruz on January 21, and ever since insurgent warships and patrols have been' watching the Spanish coast to prevent her landing her valuable cargo. It is presumed she 'did not succeed in delivering her war materials before falling into the clutches of the cruiser
