The announcement of a 25 cts. (3.1/3 %) dividend by the Hotel company (which is the first divi- dend declared by this company since 1932) came as a welcome and somewhat unexpected sur- prise and has given 2 Allip to the whole market. A very con- siderable business has been done at enhanced rates, in most of the Javourite stocks with utilities con- tinuing to the tore in active ex-On changes. The aggressive buying of the past few days appears likely to continue, so higher, mates may be expected. The Manila market has continued easy, although the close to steady. But with active interest now evinced in the Hong Kong market, Manila stocks have temporarily taken a back sent

China Lights (old) are the ex- ception, having taken their rise carller. There are sellers at $13.- 95. Telephones (old) are strong at $30 ex and the (new) at $11.60. Peak Trams (old) are $4.50 and Sandakan Lights wanted at $11.25. Cements are well supported at 11.45 and "Ropes sold at $340, Dairy Farms have risen to $25 on substantial investment buying. Watsons sold at $4.45, and are wanted further at $4.50. The pre- Binary Agures of the Ewo Cot- ton Co. for 1836 are announced. The profits amount to Sh.$1,100,- 009. and a dividend of 60 cts per share is announced. This “appears to have disappointed the market, for the shares have receded to Sh$19.50 cuin.

Hotels, on the aforementioned dividend announcement were in keen demand from $5.75 up to $0.15 and close strong buyers at the higher Fate. A large parcel of Lands was taken at $35 and subsequently shares were wanted at $38. Humphreys have improved to $9 and Realtys to $4.90. (as as the bulk of the Realty Co.'s capital is in local stocks, these last look cheap).

Rubber Stocks For Last Year

The total consumption of rubber outside the producing countries 13 given as 1,013,121 tons in the lat- est issue of the IRRC, but the United Kingdom is credited with a consumption of only 79,048 tons, this being the "calculated con- sumption," namely the nett im- perts adjusted for changes in Lon- den and Liverpool stocks.

The actual declared consumption compiled from the manufacturers own returns works out at 99,708

tona, state Messrs Symington and Wilson in their market report, so that a figure of 20,680 tons must be added to the consumption ar- rived at in the table giving a total consumption of 1,033,781 tons. The comparative gure for 1935 works out at 034,155 tons, making a total increase of 99,624 tons.

The increase in consumption in the USA. amounts to 31,040 tons, that in the United Kingdom to 4727 tons and that in other coun- tries to 13,859 tons. Probably the actual consumption in other coun- tries was rather more than ap- pears in the Agures. Recent urgent purchases by Continental countries would seem to show that stocks there have been exhausted.

As regards world stocks Messrs. Symington arid. Wilson state: In the table printed in our Report last week we showed stocks at the six principal points outside the re- gulated area at the end of Decem- ber, 1936, with a total of 453.789 tona From the LR.R.C. Bulletin we see that we put the Afloat 5.000 tons too low. We fell into this error because, for some reason which we do not yet understand, "shipments tron French-Indo-China for the month of December, were

over 8,000 tons against an average - for the previous eleven months of un- der 3,000 tons.

From the Bulletin we further see that stocks in the hands of British manufacturers, including a small adjustment in the end September at end December, agure-were 7,077 tons lower than the figure used in our table.

To correct these two Items one 'must deduct 2,077 toris from our total which brings it to 451,712 tons making the decline in stocks on the twelve months 171,424 tons.

The following are further tracts from the report:,

ex-

There have only been slight auctuations in price aince our last Report. The lowest price at which business was done In Ribbed Smoked Sheet during the period was 10ld done on Thursday, and the highest 10jd, done on Monday. There has been a moderate trade demand and a certain amount of short covering but otherwise the Market has been inactive and prices have been inclined to droop The buyer's price of Standard Sheet on the spot at the time of writing is 101d. per ib. and prices

show no change on the week.
