Traffic Sergeant W. McHardy stated that about 6.30 a.m. February 2 last; defendant was driving his car towards Waterloo Road from Kowloon City when he suddenly bumped into a tricycle going in the same direction, and which had been hugging the green islands by the side of the road. No person was injured, though the car was slightly damaged.

Defendant stated that he had been looking for a house and was apparently travelling very slowly. when the accident occurred. He had not noticed the tricycle until the car collided with it.

A fine of $20 was imposed on the defendant who was also ordered to pay $5 compensation to the owner of the tricycle.

Death Of Village Elder Recalled

Tam Shiu-ming. 18. student, was brought before Mr. K. Keen at the Central Magistracy yesterday for attempting to travel on a Shum- shlupo ferry without paying hla fare. When defendant was asked to buy his ticket he produced a monthly "ticket which belonged to his friend.

According to Tam he was taken into the office by the Inspector who said that if he would give him money the matter would not be proceeded with. Finally the sum was reduced to $6 when defen- dant said that he had no money on him. He went to ask his friend to borrow the sum, but was in- formed that such a practice such as demanding money even from an oTender was illegal Eventually defendant was taken to the Police Station.

Appearing before Mr. K, Keen at the Central Magistracy yester- day afternoon, Chan Wai-choi, 34. was, charged with the possession of about 37,000 heroin pills found in a suitcase he was carrying.

In evidence, constable C. 573. who made the arrest, said that on February 22 about 6,40 p.m. he saw defendant walking along Woon Chow Street, Tai Hang, carrying a leather suitcase on his shoulder. He went up to search him, and was informed that the contents were clothings, but defendant was unable to produce the key to open it. He arrested defendant and at the Police Station the pills were found.

DEATH INQUEST

Sitting as Coroner at the Cen- tral Magistracy yesterday. Mr. K. Keen conducted an inquest into the circumstances regarding the death of a prisoner Hon San: who died in the Victoria Gaol Hospital at 5.45 a.m. on February 28.

The jury comprised Messrs. M. Pinna (foreman). F. K, Pat- tinson Lau Ka.

Dr. G. L Shaw, medical officer of the prison testified that when defendant was admitted to prison on February 25, he was in a very poor state of health. and was at once rushed to the hospital, where till February 25, he remained when he died.

The causes of his death were due to clinical malaria.
