Spring Fashions: First Of The Paris Collections

Speculation regarding the new fashions is fast becoming fact, for Parisian dress designers are at last showing their collection and buy- ers from all corners of the globe. are studying ideas for the coming spring and summer. One point is cutstanding: that is the certainty that fussy clothes are out of the pictura. An intense streak of modernism ruma throughout all the collections which have been shown so far.

FEMININE WITHOUT FRILLS Shoulder importance is still well to the fore, the majority of coats and dresses having shoulders which are squared, though never exaggeratedly so.

Waist lines are

trim and well marked: higher for the younger woman, slightly lower and very feminine for her older sister. There are signs that there will develop this year a greater difference than has been notice- able previously between "younger" and "older" styles.

Lines are as a whole so simple that much attention has been paid to colour and detail. A riot of new shacles adds interest to clothes for morning wear or for sport and country. At the same time a cer- tain sobriety is evident in dresses fer town wear and the afternoon. All shades of yellows and greys or greens strike a pleasing note in wollen suits and tailored wear Vividly coloured blouses, both

printed and plain, are worn with short Jackets and skirts or three- quarter length coats.

VARYING SKIRT LENGTH Pleats of all types give interest to the backs of coats. Trim pleats on the left side of skirts or set directly at the back and front of other models, are all in order. Skirt lengths, as a whole reveal some difference of opinion among designers, although s0 far deinite trend towards slightly longer skirta. Particularly is this the case for afternoon, or even street, wear, and in dresses for the older woman.
